Top Chef Season 16 episode 10 preview: Hoop Dreams
In Top Chef Season 16 episode 10, the chefs have a fierce competition with a side dish of trash talk. Could another favorite be on the verge of elimination?
After last week’s surprise elimination, Top Chef Season 16 episode 10 puts competition on the menu in this week’s episode. From trivia to hoops, this week’s challenges could bring out the fierce competitive nature in the remaining chefs. Will the chefs’ dishes speak as loud as their trash talk?
According to Bravo, Top Chef Season 16 episode 10 synopsis states:
"Top Chef alum Ed Lee drops by for a Quickfire that’s part trivia, part culinary creativity; coach John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats host a concession-stand cook-off in Rupp Arena; Food & Wine Editor-in-Chief Hunter Lewis joins the judges."
For the Quickfire Challenge, it is wonderful to see Ed Lee return to Top Chef. Lee was one of the leaders who put the Kentucky culinary scene on the map. Over the years he has received numerous accolades. More importantly, he is the force behind Gochujang Ketchup (a personal favorite).

While the exact nature of the Quickfire Challenge isn’t completely clear, it does bring up a great point about chefs. To be a successful chef, she needs to have a strong culinary background and strong knowledge base. It is more than just being a good cook. Chefs need to understand cuisines, ingredients and the history of food.
Given this challenge, it will be curious to see which chefs have a broad culinary knowledge. All of these chefs are accomplished in their field. But, can they answer and perform under pressure?
As for the Elimination Challenge, preview clips seem to suggest that the chefs will have some smack talk during this concession stand cook-off. In these cooking competitions, certain short cuts are frowned upon. Using a boxed waffle mix might be one of those potential controversies. Is a boxed mix really that bad?
Going into this week’s episode, it is hard to say if there is one or even a couple of chefs who are favorites. The trend has been for previous winners to be eliminated in the following couple of episodes. Is winning a challenge a kiss of death? Maybe the “middle” or safe could be the preferred status for at least a couple more episodes.
