MasterChef Season 10 episode 13 preview: Someone’s Toast

MasterChef brings back another mystery challenge for these home cooks. Who will find creative re-invention and who will be sent home?

Another MasterChef episode brings the pressure to the kitchen. In this episode, the home cooks face a mystery box challenge. But, one home cook will present a dish that did not rise to the expectations fo the judges.

According to FOX, this week’s MasterChef episode, “Someone’s Toast” features the following:

"In another mystery box challenge, the home cooks will be forced to rise to the occasion. The contestants are surprised with a secret ingredient that they must re-invent in two unique dishes: one dish will be savory and the other sweet. With elimination on the line, one home cook will be sliced out of the competition."

While it isn’t explicit in this synopsis, it is a guess that this mystery box ingredient involves bread. Although making bread isn’t necessarily a huge challenge at home, making bread in a MasterChef kitchen can be daunting.

Putting aside the mystery ingredient, asking the home cooks to create both a savory and sweet dish is difficult. In many food competitions, a dual dish means that there are two chances of messing up and being sent home.

It will be curious to see if the home cooks make dishes that go together or dishes that are completely separate. Often, dishes that have a common theme, flavor or pairing nicely play off each other. But, the two dishes cannot be an exact replica.

Also, this challenge could be a great way for a home cook to impress the judges. The home cook who can find a way to showcase the same ingredient in both savory and sweet applications shows his versatility as a cook. That ability is a sign of a strong cook.
