Does DASANI have a solution to the single use plastic problem?
DASANI is moving the sustainability conversation forward. Are you ready to pop open a can of water versus another plastic bottle?
How often do you have a bottle of water with you? DASANI, the “number one mainstream water brand in the U.S.” is pushing consumers to think as they drink. While convenience is important, consumers need to be aware of the environmental impact of that convenience. Is this idea the solution to the single use plastic problem?
The Coca-Cola brand is supporting the company’s vision of a World Without Waste, “100% of packaging fully recyclable by 2025 and having at least 50% recycled material in all its primary packaging globally by 2030.”
That statement is huge. Single use plastics are a huge environmental issue. From the giant garbage patch to the overflowing landfills, plastics are out of control. Made from oil, plastic doesn’t break down, which means that it continues to just pile up more and more.
DASANI announced six innovations to accomplish the goals in a World Without Waste. The two big announcements are the HybridBottle and aluminum cans. If consumers are still wanting that convenience, are these two products pushing the conversation in the right direction?
The HybridBottle is made from “up to 50 percent plant-based renewable and recycled PET material.” The idea behind this bottle is boost the PlantBottle model by adding recycled content.
Finding ways to repurpose all that plastic is key. This type of thought process could see innovation in other areas, too. If this brand can implement this packaging, maybe more solutions are on the horizon. Just think of how this idea could change all type of food packaging.

Also, DASANI is adding aluminum cans. While these cans won’t be widely available till 2020, the choice is interesting. With so many other beverages available in cans, water should be available as well.
Aluminum can be recycled more easily. It will be curious to see if canned water has the same shelf life as a plastic bottle.
Other eco-friendly, single use water options haven’t really taken hold. Boxed water is available in some areas, but that packaging can be less durable. While the container is sturdy, it doesn’t have the same appeal as a bottle or can.
DASINI is smart to push this eco-packaging conversation forward. Single use plastics are and will continue to be a huge problem. Until people curb their consumption, the alternative options are a good alternative.
What do you think of the DASANI announcement? Will you buy water in a can?
