Which cake artist was ready for battle in this Buddy vs Duff Season 2 episode? Only one cake will be the ultimate victor in this Medieval Times challenge.

Each week Buddy vs Duff Season 2 has pushed the boundaries of cake artistry. These cakes are more like sculptures that expand the concept of edible art. In this week’s episode, Buddy Valastro and Duff Goldman take a step back in time and prepare for the most epic battle yet.

Going into this week’s Buddy vs Duff Season 2 episode, Buddy had a commanding lead over Duff. It wasn’t that Duff’s dinosaur cake wasn’t amazing, but it didn’t fit last week’s challenge as well as Buddy’s cake. Still, if anyone thought that the point difference would stay far apart, they must have mis-read the memo.

This week’s episode opens with quite an epic challenge, a Medieval Times cake. Whether you have enjoyed a dragon wing (aka turkey leg) while watching the Red Knight earn favor with the Queen or not, everyone knows Medieval Times.

Since each Buddy vs Duff challenge has a theme and a direction, this week’s challenge was Medieval Times themed cake that thoughtfully incorporated special effects. These cakes needed to convey the festival and fantasy of Medieval Times.

Given that special effects were part of this week’s Buddy vs Duff judging criteria, Duff had an advantage Although his cakes sometimes have failed effects, he does try to go big. More importantly, his cakes are usually all about the fantasy where a cake is more than a cake (remember the hanging cake art from last season?).

If Food Network fans were looking for a statement in the Buddy vs Duff competition, Duff’s BattleCorn might be the cake of the season. It represented everything that fans expect from Duff. It had his humor, his spectacle and it incredibly impressive.

Of course, there were a few bumps in the road. From the BattleCorn being a little too big for the door to issues with the tail, Duff had his moments. Still, the presentation of Charlie the BattleCorn was pure Duff magic.

While the fire breathing unicorn had some epic special effects, the BattleCorn worked because of the amazing sculpting. Charlie’s expression was just as important as the farting glitter. Can anyone really not smile when there is farting glitter?

Lastly, Duff proved that he can go big and do well. Although huge cakes are not in his wheelhouse, this challenge was made for him. He created a horse cake, which is one of the hardest cakes, and did it well, even with the addition of the Maryland flag. In this display, it was hard to find a downside.

Of course, Buddy would not sit idly on the sidelines. He was ready to take up his sword in this epic Medieval Times battle. In true Buddy fashion, his scene was had many moving parts.

One of the best parts of Buddy’s cakes was the attention to detail. Incorporating all the Medieval Times Knight’s flag was smart. It captured the essence of this challenge. More importantly it brought a lot of detail to the cake display.

While there was a lot of detail, the special effects were only slightly impressive. Of course, everyone loves some fireworks at the end of a presentation. Still, the dragons only moved in one direction. It would have been nice to see some more dynamic movement.

Usually, Buddy’s cakes are a little more toned down. For example, the knight was slaying the dragon, but it didn’t have an added extra element. It would have been nice to see a little spurt or reaction beyond a sword going up and down.

With all of Duff’s special effects working, it was rather clear that Duff was going to win this Buddy vs Duff challenge. The only question remaining was if the win would be enough to close the point gap.

In the end, the final score had Duff winning by three points. The cumulative score has Buddy just one point ahead of Duff.

Although the score matters, the biggest comment from this week’s Buddy vs Duff episode isn’t the standing, who wants a BattleCorn for their birthday. Maybe Charm City Cakes or Food Network can make some epic BattleCorn merchandise. Many people would be lining up for those items.
