Homemade barbecue sauce is easy to make.

With just some pantry ingredients, homemade barbecue sauce can change your summer grilling season. While purchasing a classic brand might be convenient, making barbecue sauce is quite easy. If you have mastered baking, any barbecue sauce recipe will be a breeze.

Have you ever wondered why some barbecue or grilled recipes just taste better? While grilling does take some skill, sometimes it is the sauce that makes everything just taste so much better. From a sweet profile to a touch of heat, the pantry can be filled with option for the perfect barbecue sauce.

Basically, a homemade barbecue sauce is a handful of ingredients. In most cases, a barbecue sauce consists of ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire, and paprika. Of course, there are a variety of additional ingredients, too. Truthfully, a barbecue sauce is a variety of ingredients blended together to make a special, secret sauce.

Of course, everyone has a preferred flavor combination. Some people prefer a sweeter profile while others would prefer to bring an extreme spice. Since a barbecue sauce is a combination of ingredients, , it could be different each and every time.

While everyone has a favorite or preferred barbecue sauce, my basic recipe is below. While I don’t have measurements for this recipe, the concept is to eye ball the ingredients and taste, taste, and taste again. For the most part, ketchup is the biggest ingredient and the others join in the pan. (And, you do need to heat the sauce for about 20 minutes to let everything come together).

Here’s a pantry ingredient homemade barbecue sauce.

  • Ketchup
  • Soy Sauce
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Brown Sugar
  • Worcestershire
  • Agave
  • Paprika
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Gochujang

While this barbecue sauce is the one for this weekend, the recipe can vary. If we don’t have gochujang, hot sauce is always in the house. When agave is out, we will use honey. Any vinegar can work, too.

While this idea is relatively simple and can be found in almost any recipe book, there is another barbecue sauce hack. The easiest way to make a barbecue sauce is to combine some store bought sauces and a few other ingredients. No one has to know that you started with a brand name. Put the sauce in a new bottle and you are a sauce champion. A little semi-homemade sauce could be your grilling secret weapon.

As summer grilling season begins, why not try to make a homemade barbecue sauce. It doesn’t have to be fancy or complicated. If you have joined that baking craze, why not get grilling, too.
