According to National Geographic, this week’s Gordon Ramsay Uncharted episode, South Africa, features the following:
"Chef Ramsay gets up close with rhinos, giraffes, zebras and hippos in the dramatic wilderness of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, as he learns the secrets of the traditional cuisine of Zulu warriors and masters using a local braai."
Similar to each episode’s culinary adventure, Gordon learns about flavors, traditions and customs. One signature to South African cuisine is the use of the braai. While many people are familiar with a grill, the braai is different. In some ways, it is the way that a community comes together over a meal.
While the method of cooking is important, the flavor of the food is key. Gordon learns from Chef Nene that South African flavors blend its vast and varied cultures. Whether it is borrowing influences from Indian spices or being resourceful in using local ingredients, these dishes show a unity between people, culture and land. More importantly, they tell a story that will last far longer than the food on the table.
Of course, there little moments where Gordon seems uncomfortable are always a highlight for many viewers. This week’s episode is no exception.

Anyone who has visited South Africa understands the potential threat of a hippo. While those creatures might look big and clumsy, they are quite agile and fast. Personally, having witnessed a mother hippo run on a South African game preserve, those animals are fierce.
Still, this episode has a bigger takeaway than seeing the amazing animals and hearing the cultural stories. As Chef Nene says, food is the ultimate unifier. Maybe over a table of food people can find more things that they have in common versus what they have different.
