Worst Cooks in America Season 20 premiere: Is Alex ready for these disasters?

Alex Guarnaschelli joins Anne Burrell in the Worst Cooks in America kitchen.

Another set of cooking disasters are back in Worst Cooks America. While Anne Burrell has learned to take these cooking nightmares in stride, Alex Guarnaschelli is getting her first glimpse at the doomed dishes. Can any of these terrible cooks find a glimmer of cooking potential?

According to Food Network, the Worst Cooks in America Season 20 premiere episode, “Doomed Dinners” features the following:

"Chef Anne Burrell and new mentor Alex Guarnaschelli welcome 14 of the worst cooks in America into boot camp with frightened but open arms. In order to pick teams and see what they’re working with, Chef Anne and Chef Alex task the recruits with a baseline challenge to make their favorite childhood dish. Then, for the main dish challenge, the recruits learn how to spice up their cooking by making Jamaican jerk chicken. The two recruits who cluck it up will be sent home."

In any season, the baseline cook is difficult to watch. Even though there are entertaining moments, it is hard to believe that these cooks are just so bad. Based on all these dishes, it is clear that these cooks normally order take out.

Thinking about a childhood dish, these dishes are usually simple. In some ways, any cook should be able to cook that dish. Whether it is mac and cheese, a casserole or even a steak, these dishes should be ones that most cooks can execute.

Looking at the main dish challenge, a Jamaican jerk chicken is difficult for the first challenge. The spices in a Jamaican jerk are layered. It is more than just a bunch of spices.

More importantly, cooking chicken needs to be executed well. Raw chicken will make people sick. Let’s hope that these cooks do not present raw chicken to Anne and Alex. That idea would not be a welcoming gift for Alex.

It will be interesting to see how Alex acts as the new mentor in the Worst Cooks kitchen. The Iron Chef can be quite demanding of other chefs in Food Network competition shows. Can these amateur chefs earn her respect?
