Twitter trend report: Why are people tweet obsessed about food?
From McDonald’s Spicy Chicken McNuggets to comfort food, the Twitter trend report makes us hungry.
In the recently released Twitter trend report, it seems that everyone is obsessed about food. Whether you want a free taste of the McDonald’s Spicy Chicken McNuggets or want to share your most recent baking success, the people are turning to Twitter to share each sweet treat, savory bite or epic baking fall. Does that mean Instagram foodies need to switch platforms?
Whether you haven’t left the couch or you feel like you’ve been cast in Groundhog Day, 2020 has been a chaotic year. Since everyone appreciates a great diversion, Twitter has been a platform where people can quickly, easily and sometime humorously share their thoughts. It doesn’t take a perfectly edited photo or a carefully choregraphed dance.
With people wanting to be heard, the Twitter trend report shows what people just had to express. Of course, television shows, the lack of live sports and a variety of other topics trended, but food was on many people’s minds.
Here are a few of the highlights from the Twitter trend report.
The most tweeted food item was the new McDonald’s Spicy Chicken McNuggets. Given that there’s a new promotion ahead of the new launch, it seems that McDonald’s could still be a huge trend. Wonder if Wendy’s will make funny retort to this trend.
One of the biggest trends of this year was baking. Twitter found that baking bread was the second most talked about item. Whether it was perfecting the tricky sourdough bread or just throwing that carb-free diet out the window, bread has risen to gigantic proportions.
If baking the perfect loaf of bread wasn’t enough, Twitter became obsessed with hyper realistic cakes. Whether it was the cake that looked like a roll of toilet paper or a Yoda cake, those cakes were almost too pretty to eat. Then again, you should eat cake. Edible art is still edible.

Lastly, it seems that people were craving comfort foods. Of course, everyone wants to eat a healthy greens salad for dinner, but comfort foods just bring that smile to the table. With everyone else having that extra cookie, plate of mashed potatoes or just a cheese board for dinner, people felt like they were part of a group. It’s like having that extra drink at happy hour. If everyone has one, you feel compelled to join.
While this Twitter trend report has some fun findings, it will be curious to see what the next six months bring. Could people find a health kick or maybe everyone will be eating an extra bag of Halloween candy.
What do you think will be the next big Twitter trend?
