As a Thanksgiving tradition adapts, a virtual turkey trot could earn you a tasty treat.

Are you doing a virtual turkey trot this year? For many people, Thanksgiving morning starts with a run. Even if you only run once a year, that 3K, 5K or some other distance tends to make you feel less guilty about the huge feast that will come later in the day. From holiday tradition to balanced lifestyle, there are many good reasons to get moving.

This year, the virtual turkey trot has taken the place of the in-person, large gatherings. Although some people will miss the fun costumes and even running with large groups, the virtual option can be fun, too. For example, if it’s cold outside you can run on a treadmill. Or, you can sleep in and run at 10 a.m. As long as you want to run, you can get moving on Thanksgiving Day.

If you need some encouragement to do a virtual turkey trot this year, here are some reasons to get moving.

Support a charity

Traditionally, these Thanksgiving events often raise funds for local food banks or other local community programs. Now more than ever, these types of fundraising events are vital. Even if you just walk, stroll or even waddle the event, those funds will make a difference in the community.

Get free food

For some people, a medal is motivation to get moving. This year, Dr Praegar’s is giving free Perfect Turk’y Burgers to Turkey Trots. According to brand, anyone who completes a Turkey Trot this year can enter to win free Perfect Turk’y Burgers.

To participate, post a picture on your public Instagram account and tag @drpraegers, #drpraegers and #trottinforturky. The event runs through Sunday, November 29, 2020.

Be part of a group

This year, the Peloton community has grown even stronger. This year, Peloton is hosting many turkey burn events on its digital platform. From runs to rides, the community is coming together to get moving. While there might not be a person physically running beside you, the leaderboard is cheering for you.

Less guilt at dinner

While it has been said millions of times, the concept of calories in to calories out is the key to a balanced lifestyle. There is no magic wand or spell to change that fact. Even a little extra movement on a day where you know that you might be eating more can make you feel better.

After all the hours spent on the couch this year, a virtual turkey trot might be the step in the right direction towards a more balanced lifestyle. Even if you are only doing it for the extra slice of pie later in the day, you will be glad that you got moving in the morning.
