Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix know about shaking up the perfect cocktail. While these two might be masters behind the bar, home bartenders have been trying their hand at some creative mixology. If you have wondered why your cocktail isn’t measuring up, the reason might be hiding in plain sight. Are you ready to take Tom and Ariana’s advice?

Recently, Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix have partnered with Alka Seltzer. As they mixed up some recovery mocktails, the pair shared their thoughts on common cocktail mistakes, some simple cocktail tips, and some cocktail trends.

During this conversation, the biggest takeaway is that cocktails and mocktails should be fun. While everyone wants that perfect sip, it doesn’t have to come with a shaker full of pressure. If the taste isn’t what you were expecting, try again. Sometimes the journey is part of the fun.

Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix share the big secret to the perfect cocktail.

While some people might think that the perfect cocktail comes down to a special ingredient or a specific method. The reality is that it is quite simple.

Tom and Ariana said, “We are no stranger to cocktail experimentation at home, but the most important and often neglected aspect of home bartending is measuring! Without properly measuring, drinks can be too strong, too sweet, or just bad. A simple tool like a jigger with ounce measurements can take drink making at home up several notches and take the fear out of trying new recipes!”

Although shaking up some new cocktails can be fun, some people fear the morning after. While there is no guarantee, Tom and Ariana do have some opinions on cocktails.

Tom and Ariana said, “Too much sugar can give some of the worst headaches. Personally, we’ve found the effects of champagne to be up there when it comes to indigestion and headache pain. We definitely try to avoid those super sugary drinks as much as possible. We never feel great after drinking them. Tequila can be a bit risky in terms of “big regrets,” but that’s what makes the night memorable sometimes, you know?!”

Sometimes skipping the liquor can be an option, but people want fun and flavor. Mocktails trends have been pushing those conversations forward.

For Tom and Ariana, they like to focus on flavor. “We love to combine a few fresh ingredients and use tasty garnishes, like lemons and limes, to add flavor. The more you mirror traditional cocktail recipes, the more you’ll be able to enjoy the mocktail version because it will still taste and look like a regular cocktail! There are so many reasons to partake in a mocktail, but one of our go-to reasons is when we’re recovering from overindulging the night before, a mocktail made with Alka-Seltzer helps us feel better faster so we can get back to our normal routines. Plus, it makes your drink fizzy, which is the best kind of drink! “

Although predicting food and cocktail trends can be difficult, Tom and Ariana have two hot takes. They said, “Mocktails are exploding right now! There are also many culinary techniques making the crossover into cocktails. Molecular gastronomy isn’t just for food anymore and many of those methods can be replicated at home. Necessity is the mother of invention and all of our time spent at home over the last year has made for some great inventions!”
