Food debates can quickly get heated. From the best of lists to the worst label, everyone has an opinion when it come to a particular food. Although everyone is entitled to that opinion, Taco Bell wants to pick a winner once and for all. Is the Taco Bell Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco a chicken taco or a chicken sandwich?

Recently, the popular quick service restaurant tested its new Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco. After a successful limited launch, the new menu item will hit all restaurants on September 2. For Taco Bell app users, there will be a Happier Hour offering on August 30.

For those unfamiliar with Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco, Taco Bell describes the dish as jalapeno buttermilk marinated chicken with Mexican spices and “rolled” in a tortilla chip coating. The chicken is served in a “warm soft flatbread” that has been shaped into a taco. Topped with creamy chipotle sauce, the Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco can be ordered regular or spicy. Spicy includes crunchy jalapeno slices.

While many people are counting the days to enjoy this new menu item, the truth is that this chicken offering brings up a new food debate. It isn’t the chicken versus the egg or even another barb in the chicken sandwich wars. It goes back to what is or is not a sandwich.

Is the new Taco Bell Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco a taco or a sandwich?

As Liz Matthews, Taco Bell’s Global Chief Food Innovation Officer said, “Our new crispy chicken innovation is far from the average chicken sandwich, and we’re certain it will get a spicy reaction from sandwich and taco fans alike. Even the masterminds from our test kitchen couldn’t decide if it was more taco or sandwich, which is why we’re excited to bring in the debate team experts to have some fun.”

On September 4, University of Georgia and Clemson University debate teams will put this food controversy to bed. It might not be a scene from Old School, but it will declare a winner in this sandwich versus taco discussion.

According to the brand, “The Great Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco Debate” will air on Saturday, Sept. 4 during the Georgia vs Clemson primetime college football game on ABC (7:30 p.m. ET).” And, just because the debate declares a winner doesn’t mean that everyone has to agree. Remember the hot dog sandwich debate has never been solved.

For now, put the taste to the test. Head to a Taco Bell on September 2 and enjoy a taste for yourself.
