As Walt Disney World celebrates its 50th anniversary, the Disney chefs looked back at the Walt Disney’s favorite foods and drew inspiration for some of the Walt Disney World 50th anniversary foods. Although Walt’s imagination was legendary, his food preferences were a little less out of this world.

Over the years, the American palate has changed dramatically. While the images of the 1950s TV dinners might look amusing now, they tell a simple tale of American food history. Before bold spices and fusion food, the American dinner tables were filled with old school, family favorites. A meat, a starch and a vegetable were the concise story on a plate.

What were some Walt Disney’s favorite foods?

According to Walt Disney World, Walt’s palate was rather plain. From meat and potatoes to chili to even fried chicken, it was relatively straightforward. In some ways, his love of prime rib hash might be the most exciting food on the plate.

For desserts, the All-American favorites were common choices. While bread pudding might be a little different, there was a love of chocolate.

Although Disney Chefs are constantly looking to push food innovation on their menus, the 50th anniversary celebration did draw from Walt Disney’s favorite foods. From the filet mignon dinner at The Brown Derby to chocolate desserts, the blend of classics with modern seems fitting for Walt Disney World.

While today’s food options might have never been a thought in the kitchen 50 years ago, these food choices show how the American food scene has evolved over the years. Today’s Disney chefs have a plethora of resort grown or locally sourced produce, can use numerous culinary techniques and can even add a little culinary magic to the plate.

Whether or not Walt Disney would choose a classic meat and potatoes dish or prefer to step into the culinary unknown is not the point. Instead, the Disney chefs have mixed that sense of wonder and awe on the plate while never losing sight of the traditions that make Walt Disney World magical.
