Jet-Puffed puts a sweet twist on the sandwich debate
Ready for another food question for the ages? Jet-Puffed is taking on the definition of the sandwich. It wants to skip the savory side and put the sweetness between that bread. Are you ready for the S’moagie?
What is the definition of a sandwich? While people can go through the historical references to whom and from where that particular food originated, the reality is that a sandwich does have an actual definition. Putting aside the hot dog issue, the USDA qualifies a “sandwich as a having meat or poultry between two slices of bread.”
Based on that particular definition, a lot of food choices that are labeled sandwiches are misnomers. Just think about it for a second. Grilled cheese is does not qualify nor does a peanut butter and jelly. If you can’t call those items sandwiches, what are they? Bread with a filling?
How is Jet-Puffed making a claim for broader sandwich definition?
When thinking about food served between two “breads,” the definition of a sandwich expands. Beyond the savory food world, sandwich cookies are a great example. What should those desserts be called if not a sandwich? Cookies with filling?
Recently, Jet-Puffed asked via Twitter, is a s’more a sandwich. The results showed “61% answered YES and 39% answered NO.” While not an overwhelming victory for the sandwich people, it is a win none the less.
In honor of a s’mores being a sandwich, Jet-Puffed is tackling the sandwich debate head on with the S’moagie, the “indisputable s’mores sandwich.” Per the brand, “The S’moagie is made with graham-cracker infused bread and sweet crispy prosciutto but still contains the quintessential s’mores ingredient – perfectly toasted JET-PUFFED marshmallows.”
According to Allison Kelly, Associate Director of Marketing for the JET-PUFFED brand, “Here at JET-PUFFED, we maintain that a s’more is a sandwich. To make this an indisputable fact, we’re launching the JET-PUFFED S’moagie with the ultimate sandwich creators at Alidoro, to develop a s’more that can be enjoyed like a traditional sandwich without question .”
Specifically, the S’moagie captures all the flavors of an elevated s’mores in a creative way. From the graham-cracker infused hoagie to the dark chocolate and sea salt spread to the Jet-Puffed marshmallows, it has all those flavors, no fire required.
Although some people might question the prosciutto, the reality is that the savory note is what makes this sandwich special. Just like an elevated dessert captures all the flavor profiles that hint of savory makes each bite even more enjoyable.
Thinking about this sandwich, many chefs and bakers might use the sandwich as food inspiration. Why can’t this idea be turned into a plated dessert? In some ways, it could push the sweet creativity level in many directions.
Just in time for National Sandwich Day on November 3, the Jet-Puffed S’moagie will be available at Alidoro shops, which are located in New York City’s Rockefeller Center and Bryant Park. The sandwich will sell for $10. In addition, the S’moagie Box will be available on Goldbelly.com while supplies last.
