Although the holiday lyrics mention chestnuts roasting on the fire, those roasted chestnuts are not just a song lyric. From that tempting aroma to that first taste, the holiday food tradition might be one that should never fade from memory.

From Christmas markets to Epcot International Festival of the Holidays, it seems that roasted chestnuts and other warm nuts are the holiday snack. Whether it is the sweetness, the time of year or something else, people cannot get enough.

Looking through food history, it isn’t quite clear who or why the first person roasted chestnuts. It is clear that the food seems to be more prevalent during the holiday season.

From the Italian version that is seen at various marketplaces to the New Years’ Japanese traditional symbolizing strength, there is as much meaning as deliciousness to enjoying the warm, roasted nuts.

This year both Epcot and Universal Orlando are putting roasted nuts front and center on the menu. Epcot International Festival of the Holidays has a marketplace devoted to roasted nuts. The Chestnuts and Good Cheer Holiday Kitchen features fire-roasted chestnuts as well as cinnamon-glazed almonds, cashews, and pecans.

Whether it is the first stop as you enter the park or the treat to be enjoyed while watching Harmonious, that holiday delight should not be missed. Although many people will opt for a hot chocolate as a pairing, the Ivanhoe Park Brewing Co Hazel Nutty-Cracker Sweet Stout enjoyed with those warm nuts will have you singing loud for all to hear.

Given that Universal Orlando’s holiday ambassador is Earl the Squirrel, it makes sense that the Holiday Tribute Store would have some warm nuts. Even though all the sparkling lights dazzle and the other sweet treats tempt, those little packages of nuts are a must. Consider buying a few bundles to enjoy while watching the Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s Balloons. Don’t worry, Santa won’t mind that you’ve enjoying a treat while he waves hello.

Even if the story as to why roasted chestnuts are a holiday tradition is a little muddled, the reality is that the traditional holiday food makes the season complete. Put down the cookies and enjoy a few nuts. Sometimes being a little nutty is all what it cracked up to be.
