While many people stood strong in their resolve to pass on their signature cocktail for all of dry January, that commitment might be easier said than done. Could the sober curious concept be a commitment that lasts far longer than just one month?

Many people enjoy a great cocktail, ice cold beer or even a luscious glass of wine. While those alcoholic beverages might flow freely, over indulgence does not lend itself to a balanced lifestyle.

As a new year begins, resolutions tend to take over the mindset. After the lavishness of the holidays, many people want to take a step back, reset and try a different path. But, that complete flip of the switch can lead some people feeling overwhelmed. While the first couple of days seem easy, as the end of the month looms, the resolve may not be as strong.

Although there are many reasons and/or benefits to skipping that cocktail, the idea of sober curious might be a resolution that is one that lasts long past January. The idea of switching from mocktails to cocktails depending on situation is one that more people are starting to appreciate.

According to the Bacardi 2022 Beverage Trends Report, the idea of sober curious continues to rise. The idea of a “flexible sobriety” fits many people’s lifestyles. Similar to the flexitarian food trend, the idea of having sober nights balanced with cocktail hour appeals to many.

Bacardi found that “58% globally drinking more non-alcoholic and low-ABV cocktails (NoLo) than a year ago.” With that change in approach, non-alcoholic beverages are becoming more creative. It is more than just a sparkling water with a twist.

In some ways, mocktails seem to be on the cusp of creativity. From exotic ingredients to layers of flavors, no one feels as if they are missing alcohol in that sip. Instead, they might prefer to have that non-alcoholic beverage.
