As everyone sips on dirty sodas this summer, some people would like a little extra pour in the glass. When cocktail hour calls, why not sip on a Dirty Shirley. Could it have you singing about that good ship?

Growing up, many people enjoyed that Shirley Temple. Whether it made a kid feel like a grown-up while others sipped on that cocktail or it was that sweet cherry taste, it has become a classic mocktail before the term mocktail was bantered about.

One of the bigger beverage trends this summer is the dirty soda. A favorite of celebrities and TikTok, it makes a plain soda even sweeter. Whether it is an additional syrup or cream, it is that extra that makes the beverage so enjoyable. If anyone love the melted part of a root beer float, this beverage is for you.

Most of the “dirty” comes from adding some type of extra. It is basically corrupting the soda with the additional flavor. Although some people might prefer a less negative adjective descriptor, that “dirty” makes the sip even more pleasurable.

As more and more people join this beverage trend, it has led to various takes on that “extra.” In a Dirty Shirley, the extra isn’t necessarily a cream or a syrup. It is the SKYY Vodka. That classic mocktail is taking an adult turn.

Here’s how to make a Dirty Shirley.

  • 2 ounces SKYY Vodka
  • 1 ounce grenadine
  • 8 ounces lemon-lime soda (such as Sprite or 7Up)
  • 1 maraschino cherry, for garnish

  • Fill a highball glass with ice. Add vodka and grenadine to the glass, and top with soda. Garnish with a maraschino cherry and enjoy!

While this simple version is easy for anyone to master, it isn’t the only option available. Why not change the liquor for an even sweeter experience.

For example, a Dirty Shirley with the Captain Morgan Cherry Vanilla Rum? That would add another layer to the soda shop vibe and make the cocktail even sweeter.

Given the rise in popularity of ready to drink, canned cocktails, there is a Dirty Shirley option that is waiting to be cracked open. The Black Infusions Dirty Shirley RTD uses a dark cherry vodka to heighten that cherry flavor. Infused with real cherries, this option brings cleaner, real cherry flavors instead of overly syrupy, sweet beverages that are often part of the sipping experience.

As Barbara Davidson, Co-Founder of Black Infusions said regarding the classic Shirley Temple, “It was speical, it was fun and it was yummy, and after the last two years, I figured we could all use a reminder of simpler times. Our new Dark Cherry vodka gives us a delicious yet all-natural twist with the convenience of a can.”

Whether it is a backyard barbecue, day at the beach or just convenience, the The Dirty Shirley RTD is a way to enjoy the trend with ease. Plus, this particular version of the beverage takes all that nostalgia that people crave yet gives it a modern twist. Being a kid again is worth every sip.
