Drink wine like a royal during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
Marking 70 years on the throne should come with a special toast. As the world watches the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebration, it is the perfect excuse to open a bottle or two. If you want to drink wine like a royal, these wine suggestions will receive high praise from the both the throne and the commoners.
Picking a wine can cause some people to throw their hands up and grab another light lager from the cooler. From appreciating the vintage to understanding the terroir, all the terms can be confusing.
Still, picking a wine to enjoy comes down to appreciating the flavor. Although the most respected sommeliers can debate all the various characteristics and present a well-versed explanation, the person drinking the wine needs to like it.
Even though the talented sommeliers might have disappeared from the restaurant, the guidance of wine experts can help steer people in the right direction. It is more than just picking a wine based on the enticing label. The liquid inside the glass is the most important.
To help celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Vivino has curated some wine suggestions based on the royal families preferences. While these bottles might not have the royal crest, it can be fun to explore the various options to determine if one wine quenches a specific thirst. Although these wines do not have to be served in the expensive crystal, each one has a uniqueness that deserves a moment to savor.
As Aidy Smith, Vivino Global Brand Ambassador said, “Celebrate in style with some of the Royal Family’s favorite tipples. The good news is you don’t need the bank balance of a royal to indulge this Jubilee Weekend, nor do you need a royal sommelier when you’ve got the power of Vivino’s 60 million-strong community at your fingertips. With completely unbiased ratings and reviews, no one is better suited than Vivino’s community to bring wine drinkers closer to the wines we know they’ll love.”
Queen Elizabeth
While Her Majesty might have had to cut back on her tipples, Queen Elizabeth has had her fair share of wine over the years. Although she has shown a fondness for English Sparking wines, which have grown in popularity and prestige thanks to climate change, those bottles might not be as readily available on the shelf.
Instead, consider another favorite, the German Riesling. Often a wine that improves with age, there are many Rieslings that are worthy of enjoying a bottle or two. Plus, the wine can be reasonably priced.
Vivino recommends Nik Weis Selection Urban Riesling 2020, priced around $12 a bottle, Dr. Loosen Dr. L Riesling 2020, priced around $13 a bottle, or Markus Molitor Haus Klosterberg Riesling Trocken 2017, around $25 a bottle.
Prince William & Kate
Although special occasions, like their wedding, had guests enjoying a Rose Brut, it appears that Merlot is preferred by the stylish royal couple. While that varietal can be quite varied, Vivino has a few suggestions that will have many people rediscovering the nuances of the red wine.
While a little pricier, these Merlot wines have high ratings with users. For example, Silverado Vineyards Mt George Vineyard Merlot 2018 has a 4.5 Vivino Star Rating, but it will cost around $40 a bottle. The Fugue de Nénin Pomerol 2016 is priced at $35 and the Emmolo Merlot 2018 is around $50. All three are lovely examples to open and explore the beauty of a Merlot.
Prince Harry & Meghan
Even though Harry and Meghan might live in California, they are drawn to Italian Tuscan wines. This style of wine is known for being hearty, but with berry, cocoa and even a little vanilla oak notes woven into the various offerings.
According to the Vivino community, there are a few bottles to try. Priced around $25, both the Tenuta Luce Lecente 2018 and Ornellaia Le Volte 2019 are both lovely examples of the wine. For a bigger investment, consider the Tenuta Argentiera Villa Donoratico Bolgheri 2017 which is around $42 a bottle.
As the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations continue, consider skipping the afternoon tea and open a bottle of these wines. They might not have a royal stamp of approval, but they are an enjoyable sip.
