Sonic’s Steak Butter Bacon Cheeseburger looks to challenge a competitor

While America’s Drive-In might delight guests with its delicious shakes and sensational slushies, it is often the burgers that have people getting into the car and making the trip. With Sonic’s Steak Butter Bacon Cheeseburger, the steakhouse inspired menu item is a bold bite and it might give another butter burger a run for its money.

Recently, Sonic has added various menu items to much fanfare. While the Broccoli Cheddar Tots might have had people feeling less guilty about their food choices, the Fried Cookie Dough Bites were the sweet ending to the meal that most people cannot resist. With the newest menu offering, the popular quick service restaurant is going big and bold with its cheeseburger.

As Mackenzie Gibson, Vice President of Culinary & Menu Innovation at SONIC shared, “SONIC is known for our ongoing menu innovation and totally craveable cheeseburger offerings, and the new Steak Butter Bacon Cheeseburger brings all of the elevated flavor you’d expect from an upscale steakhouse to the drive-in. When crafting this cheeseburger, our culinary team created a steak-seasoned butter that’s melted on the burger patty itself with a mixture of garlic, black pepper, red pepper and dill, resulting in an indulgent cheeseburger you can’t find at other quick-service restaurants.”

The new Steak Butter Bacon Cheeseburger has joined the menu for a limited time. It is described as “100% pure beef patty, dolloped with a rich and creamy butter infused with savory steakhouse seasonings, layered with two slices of American cheese, crispy bacon, grilled onions, mayo, and served on a toasted bakery bun.”

Looking at the menu description, it does have a nod to the way that some steaks are served. That dollop of butter adds an unctuous layer to the juicy protein and amplifies the flavor. Combined with the seasonings, it ensures that every bite is flavorful.

Although this menu item is served with American cheese, it would have been nice to have a cheddar or even a Swiss cheese option. Swapping out the cheeses would have been a nice nod to the steakhouse vibe. But, the grilled onions are a nice, more elevated touch to the cheeseburger.

It is curious that Sonic chose to add a “butter burger” style offering. Another quick service restaurant is known for its butter burgers. While it might not be the next social media jab, it could be a way for the food wars to heat up again.
