Whether watched in person or enjoyed while preparing the holiday feast at home, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has become a favorite tradition. This year, Wonder Bread is set to travel between the buildings as it makes its way through Manhattan. More importantly, that moment comes with giving back to the community.

As the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade embarks on its 96th year, many people are waiting to see the new balloons and floats joining those perennial favorites. From classic characters to food brands, the Manhattan streets are full with vibrant views all the way to Herald Square.

This year, Wonder Bread has joined the Thanksgiving holiday tradition. The classic sandwich bread is celebrating its 101 years of being a family favorite. While that slice of bread might be simple, it holds endless possibilities. From that simple peanut butter and jelly sandwich to an elevated bite, the pantry staple is always on the shopping list.

According to John Steed, senior vice president of legacy brands at Flowers Foods, “What better way to commemorate a historic moment in Wonder history than to team up with another iconic American brand at its biggest celebration of the year? Like Wonder Bread, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a cherished tradition for many American families as they come together to celebrate Thanksgiving and the official start of the holiday season – it was just a perfect fit. To say we’re excited is an understatement; this is truly an honor.”

The Wonder Bread float is titled “The Wondership.” While that idea might sound like a classic song, the idea is meant to evoke the hot balloon race that inspired the classic bread’s branding. Featuring red, yellow, and blue balloons, the design is meant to capture people’s imagination, have them filled with what is possible, and encourage them to always look upwards.

Thinking about the sentiments behind the design, that sense of “wonder” is fitting not just for the holidays but also for every day. Even though white sandwich bread might seem simple, it allows people to use them culinary creativity, imagination, and more in the kitchen. Sometimes, it isn’t about the splashiest moment, it is about the one that resonates with people.

As part of Wonder Bread’s appearance in the 96th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the company is donating 10,000 of its Classic White Bread to City Harvest. Given that charitable organizations are often taxed with more requests at the end of the year, this donation can help in many ways.

When the Wondership sets sail during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, take a moment and let the mind wander and wonder. And, maybe later when that turkey sandwich hits the table, be thankful for the sliced bread that has been around for over 100 years.
