Everyone has seen the memes, heard the frustration, and otherwise emptied their wallets to purchase some eggs. While the food staple continues to soar in cost, one state has the lowest dozen egg cost. Are you within driving distance?

Food prices have been a constant part of the news cycle. Even though many people have learned to budget better, find ingredient alternatives, and other food swaps, the reality is that grocery shopping costs more. Although many people hoped that the new year would bring wallet relief, the changes are slow to be implemented.

While there are many reasons why the costs continue to be high, it is something that shoppers have to navigate. When the price impacts a grocery staple, it is harder to avoid that purchase. Eggs are one of those items.

Although the reasoning behind what some people call extreme egg prices, the reality is that the cause does not change the impact on the food budget. For people who want scrambled eggs for breakfast or are baking that cake, the reality is that eggs are on the shopping list. Even if some people might have switched to an egg substitute, the higher than normal prices have not dropped, yet.

Recently, Instacart researched egg costs across the nation. Given that the brand is available to 95% of households in the U.S. and Canada, the company has useful insights into grocery shopping.

According to the brand’s data, the most expensive dozen eggs can be purchased in Hawaii. With an average price of $9.73, eggs might be more expensive than a steak dinner. While that statement might be an exaggeration, the reality is that it is substantial. Whether it is the island locale or something else, it is 53% more than the next state on the list.

Florida has an average of $6.36 per dozen eggs. That price is 53 cents an egg. Although buying individual eggs may not be an option, the cost can have some people skipping that incredible protein for breakfast. And, it might change Easter plans this year.

While much has been said about the most expensive egg costs, the lowest dozen egg cost might not be as low as people would like. According to the Instacart data, Missouri is the least expensive egg cost at $4.24 a dozen, on average.

Here are the top five lowest dozen egg cost states:

  • Missouri – $4.24 average
  • Nebraska – $4.25 average
  • Indiana – $4.33 average
  • Ohio – $4.39 average
  • Kansas – $4.41 average

As seen with the list, the states are located in the Midwest. It could be proximity to farm, it could be circumstance, or it could be just life. No matter the reason, it does not negate that consumers’ have seen a 54% cost increase between 2021 and 2022.

Is there food cost relief on the horizon? Only time will tell. For now, take care of that precious cargo. The phrase about crying over spilt milk might change to cracked eggs.
