Dos Hombres and PopCorners create the ultimate big game commercial cocktail
As many people have heard, PopCorners has revealed clips from its upcoming Super Bowl commercial. Bringing back together the Breaking Bad characters, the popular Frito-Lay snack brand has cooked up a successful concept. But, the crunchy snack isn’t the only connection to Breaking Bad that can be part of the gig game. Dos Hombres Mezcal, from Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, has a delightful cocktail that is the perfect toast for the night.
Food and the big game are always a winning combination. Although people can debate on the best chicken wing flavor, saving the big meal for halftime, or a variety of other food conversations, the reality is that food and beverage pairings can make the event more festive.
When hosting a big game party, there are a few concepts which make the day go more smoothly. For example, it can be hard to have every beer from the store. Picking a light lager, a hoppy IPA, and maybe a non-alcoholic beer could be sufficient.
For cocktails, a signature cocktail, with a recipe on the bar, can be a fun choice. Just like the host does not want to spend the day in the kitchen, she does not want to be mixing drinks all night. If a punch is not in order, a signature cocktail could be the easy answer for the celebration.
Since PopCorners might be one of the most talked about Super Bowl commercials of the night. Dos Hombres Mezcal has shared signature cocktail for the event. Using PopCorners as a garnish, it is a nice cross over.
Also, this cocktail, created by mixologist Cody Goldstein of Muddling Memories, the spice level is approachable but sufficient enough to get noticed. More importantly, it is the layers of spice that make this cocktail so enjoyable. There is sweet heat contrasted by tingling spices. It will have drinkers going back for another sip after sip.
THE SPICY AMIGO – featuring Dos Hombres and PopCorners
Makes 1 cocktail:
- 2 oz Dos Hombres Mezcal
- PopCorners® Spicy Queso
- 3/4 oz fresh lime juice and lime wedges
- 3/4 oz hot honey
- 1/2 oz Aperol
- Spicy salt
- Ginger beer
Batching for a crowd (makes ~8):
- 2 cups Dos Hombres Mezcal
- PopCorners® Spicy Queso
- 6 oz fresh lime juice and lime wedges
- 6 oz hot honey
- 4 oz Aperol
- Spicy salt
- Ginger beer
Directions:
- Place a handful of PopCorners Spicy Queso into a zip-top bag and crush to a fine dust using a rolling pin. Combine PopCorners dust and a pinch of spiced salt onto a plate to taste. Run a lime wedge along the rim of a highball glass and dip into the PopCorners dust and salt combo to rim the glass. Add Dos Hombres Mezcal, lime juice, hot honey, and Aperol into the glass over fresh ice. Stir, top with ginger beer and stir again. Garnish with a lime wheel and PopCorners Spicy Queso as a “snack back!”
- To batch for a crowd, follow the same directions combining the ingredients into a punchbowl over ice.
Plus, the ideas in this cocktail can be applied to other beverages too. Why not have a snack back with other drinks or use snacks as a dusting garnish. The options are many.
