2023 First Lady’s Commemorative Egg celebrates the power of education
While the children enjoy the annual White House Egg Roll, another egg tradition celebrates the First Lady and her causes. Since 1977, the American Egg Board has created a special Commemorative Egg honoring the First Lady and the nation. The 2023 First Lady’s Commemorative Egg in honor of Jill Biden encourages everyone to use education to reach for the stars.
Over the years, each of the American Egg Board creations has had a different theme. While the decorative egg is a visual masterpiece, it is the sentiment behind the delicate egg that stands the test of time. From Mrs. Michelle Obama’s influence to encourage everyone to get moving to Mrs. Laura Bush’s librarian past, each one is not only a reflection of the recipient but also a statement about the nation’s mood.
For the 46th First Lady Commemorative Egg, artist Carolyn Bickel created an egg that reflects the power and gift that education offers. With an image of children reading in the grass, the moment conveys that education offers limitless possibilities for all people. Whether it is one book or one page at a time, the path to achievement is endless.
Woven into the design are the words, “unity,” “compassion,” “kindness,” and “connection.” Those nouns are meant to encourage people to dream big while joining together to help one another. As the little girl reaches for the stars, the imagery encourages everyone and anyone to dream bigger. But, those dreams are closer to being reached when standing on the foundation of education.
Dr. Jill Biden has been a strong educational advocate. Whether it is access to a quality education or inspiring people to never stop learning, Dr. Biden looks to be a voice of change.
While the 2023 First Lady’s Commemorative Egg is one of many through this long tradition, the collective group has a bigger sentiment that just an annual celebration. Throughout the years, the images and the concepts convey a sense of hope, a desire for a stronger future, and an understanding that all people must come together for a positive impact.
Although the American Egg Board has a plethora of incredible recipes and ideas for showcasing eggs, this annual event has a tie to the farmers beyond the bounty that is often highlighted at Easter. As some people can appreciate, a farm is only as strong as the community supporting it. Just like many of the First Ladies’ causes, it does take a village to build a better tomorrow.
The 2023 First Lady’s Commemorative Egg will be presented to Dr. Jill Biden during the White House Easter “EGGucation” Roll on Monday, April 10.
