Although it might be too early to definitely name the must have summer beverage, the Espresso Tonic is gaining food trend buzz. Even if some people will not put down that Espresso Martini, the new coffee forward concoction goes beyond cocktail hour. Ready to enjoy this effervescent, flavorful sip?

As one beverage trend empties, another full one is waiting to take its place. Over the past several years, there have been whipped coffees for that super sweet sip and orange juice with coffee for a smoother taste. Some people have even fallen into the coffee and olive oil concept. Even though there are many ways to get that caffeine boost, the plain black coffee is not usually the only ingredient in the glass.

The Espresso Tonic is as simple as it comes. It combines tonic water with a shot of espresso. While there can be some technique in getting the layered combination correct, it is far from complicated.

Equally important is the quality ingredients used. A strong espresso needs to stand up to the tonic and vice versa. It is definitely worth grabbing that bottle of Q Mixers with a shot of illy espresso.

At The Venetian Resort Las Vegas, the E&T is their version of the trending drink. Available at Matteo’s and BRERA Osteria, the resort has gracious shared how they make it.

E&T

  • 4 oz. Tonic
  • 2 oz. Espresso

As seen with the description, it is simple. But, what if that classic concept received a little twist. For example, an easy way to boost the coffee flavor would be to use frozen coffee cubes. That similar hack is common with iced coffee.

In addition, some people would prefer to add a shot of liquor to the glass. The easiest option would probably be a vodka, similar to an espresso martini, or a coffee liqueur like Kahlua. A little experimentation could be a fun way to pass the day.

Whether or not the Espresso Tonic is the “it” beverage of the summer remains to be seen. For now, it is worth trying at least once. After all, it be better to be ahead of the curve than behind it.
