While the food television episode description seems straightforward, the first challenge is not as easy as it seems. This season’s cooks have very diverse backgrounds. From particular flavor profiles to unique ingredients, this challenge might have the cooks feeling a little heated in the kitchen.

As seen in this The Great American Recipe Season 2 episode 6 clip, a recipe swap is not easy.

While most cooks have a favorite or signature dish, that recipe might not be the easiest idea for another cook to master on the first try. All these cooks have talent and cooking skills. Still, adapting to a new recipe, specifically one that they may have never made, is an appreciation of cooking knowledge. Even though the helpful hint from Chef Graham Elliot about warm stock and risotto can lead a cook down a better path, she needs to have the confidence to trust her experience to accomplish the task at hand.

Thinking about this recipe swap dish, it is a lovely way to see the similarities across the different cultures. Hawaiian food might have rice in many dishes, but it is far from risotto. But, the idea of a protein served with a rice or pasta is seen across almost every culture. Instead of focusing on the differences, it might be time to uncover the common bonds.

With the second challenge, this idea of a recipe handed down through generations is the heart of The Great American Recipe. As it was said throughout season 1, recipes can be a chapter in a family archive. Even if one generation modifies the classis a touch, that plate of food connects the past, present and future.

This episode might be a great reminder to ask grandma how to make that traditional Thanksgiving stuffing or maybe sit in the kitchen as she makes Sunday gravy. Memories are made around the table, but they need the next generation to cook the dishes to keep them fresh in everyone’s mind.
