Flamin’ Hot University and Megan Thee Stallion assist TSU students
As college students settle into the school life, one course might not be on the schedule, how to repay college loans. For some TSU students, Flamin’ Hot University and Megan Thee Stallion are ready to ignite a flavorful and helpful conversation. Isn’t it time to ignite some unlimited potential?
While she might be known for heating up the charts, Megan Thee Stallion is a proud graduate of Texas Southern University. Earning her degree in health administration in 2021 from the HBCU, the artist fulfilled a goal that she set long before she was a household name.
Now, she is back helping TSU with some help from Frito Lay. As part of the new Flamin’ Hot University, the GRAMMY award-winning musician is encouraging everyone to “Unleash their Flamin’ Hot.” While this fictious university might be more about flavor than GPAs, it is helping college students fulfill their dreams.
The special university is selling a curated streetwear collection in collaboration with Melody Ehsani. The proceeds from these pieces will establish a TSU scholarship fund.
As Tina Mahal, senior vice president of marketing at Frito-Lay explained, “Everyone deserves to be their Flamin’ Hot self, but student loans can create a significant burden on college graduates – especially at HBCUs where students graduate with 19% more debt than those at non-HBCUs1. The Flamin’ Hot University scholarship fund at TSU was designed to ease some of the financial pressures student loans bring so graduates can focus on unleashing their hottest potential.”
Although other food brands have created their fictional universities, this special event is more than just the love of a flavorful snack and the desire to look hot. It puts the spotlight on a real conversation that impacts higher education.
The financial burden college loans creates for students can be a barrier to entry. The choice between a diploma and a debt figure that takes decades to repay is one that students face daily. By helping deserving students achieve their goals while removing that financial barrier is vital for the future.
Still, there is a lighthearted, fun aspect to this event. Who wouldn’t want to take a college course on the history of food or the intersection of food and fashion. Those courses might be more engaging than the history of the Roman Empire or the intricacies of college algebra.
