While this season might focus on the American Dream, this classic Hell’s Kitchen challenge is never as easy as it seems. In Hell’s Kitchen Season 22 episode 5, the surf and turf relay has the teams baiting each other to see who will catch a win.

According to FOX, Hell’s Kitchen Season 22 episode 5, “Bring a DARN Fish!” features the following:

"It is finally time for the infamous Surf & Turf relay challenge where the chefs will taste and identify mystery proteins as quickly as possible. Some chefs ace the taste test while others crash and burn. The losers will have to break down entire salmons for dinner service while the winners spend some quality time with Chef Ramsay learning how to axe-throw. The evening’s dinner service is attended by actor Dolph Lundgren, and singer/choreographer Paula Abdul in the all-new “Just Bring the DARN Fish!” episode of Hell’s Kitchen airing Thursday, Oct. 26 (8:00 PM – 9:00 PM) on FOX."

Certain Hell’s Kitchen challenges are more than just earning a win for the Red or Blue Team. The Surf and Turf relay gives insight into the chefs’ palates. Some food combinations might be obvious, but others are far from easy. Quickly identifying the ingredient is not only a skill, it shows a chef’s knowledge. But, this challenge is not about one individual.

In this exclusive clip from Hell’s Kitchen Season 22 episode 5, the challenge might be more than just correctly guessing the proteins.

Although this clip does not necessarily give any indication of which team earns the win, the Blue Team might be choosing the wrong attitude with their commentary. A little banter is fine, but going too far over the edge can backfire. That attitude might fire up the Red Team and have them charging forward for the win.

While speed and accuracy are key with this challenge, there is a teamwork aspect. Both teams have had communication problems. Whether it is one chef out for personal gain or another chef who might be the villain, the reality is that this Surf and Turf relay is not about individual glory.

Winning the Surf and Turf relay does come with a reward. Axe throwing might be cathartic, but it is an opportunity to spend time with Gordon Ramsay. Any time that the chefs can receive insight from their potential boss is important.

For dinner service, the chefs are still struggling. From improperly cooked proteins to inconsistent timing, the teams need to work on their communication. Maybe the relay challenge will help that scenario. As long as the divide is not widened, the teams might be on the path to a more successful dinner service. Something needs to happen for them to learn to communicate and function as a smoothly running kitchen brigade.

Which team will hook a win in Hell’s Kitchen Season 22 episode 5? Be sure to watch the new episode on FOX, Thursday night at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Episodes can be streamed the next day on Hulu.
