Have you ever just wanted to ask someone a question and get an unfiltered answer? Billy Eichner has turned that moment into an art form with his “On the Streets” concept. To kick off summer lemonade season and to celebrate Truly Unruly Lemonade, Billy took to the streets to create a new take on that traditional lemonade stand.
Lemonade and summer fun go hand in hand. That perfect pucker pairs with almost any food. From a simple burger to spicy barbecue, there is a reason why it is poured at every summer gathering.
Truly is taking that summertime classic and offering its own amplified offering to shake up the food and beverage conversation this summer. The new Truly Unruly Lemonade brings the party wherever and whenever those cans are opened.
With a bold 8% ABV, the four creative lemonade flavors, Bumpin’ Blue Razz, “OG” Original, Punched-Up Pineapple, and Wild Pink, are far from that juvenile lemonade stand offering. At the same time, each one captures the sense of carefree fun that people crave during the summer months.
To get everyone excited about Truly Unruly Lemonade, the brand partnered with Billy Eichner. Given that Billy knows what it is like to shake things up on the streets, the beverage brand knew that he was the perfect person for “Lemonade Stand-Up.”
Speaking about this partnership, Matt Withington, Truly Hard Seltzer’s senior director of marketing said, “Like Billy, Truly Unruly Lemonade plays by its own rules. We’ve flipped the traditional lemonade stand on its head by creating an audaciously adult version with the ‘Lemonade Stand-Up.’ It's nostalgic and familiar, yet boldly rebellious, delivering the classic refreshment you remember with a twist.”
Through his partnership with Truly Unruly Lemonade, Billy Eichner graciously answered some questions. While his special lemonade stand has been closed for the season, there are plenty of ways to get a taste of Billy’s sense of humor all summer long.
Cristine Struble: Did you ever have a lemonade stand growing up? What's the key to a great lemonade? How do you think that the Truly Lemonade Stand will get people's attention?
Billy Eichner: I didn't, I grew up in New York City - no one has a lemonade stand here! You got to have the perfect mix of sweet and sour. People were receptive to the Truly Lemonade Stand-Up. We had Elena, one of everyone's favorite Billy on the Street guests out there behind the lemonade stand. And just Elena in general, makes people happy. So, it worked!
Struble: You have approached all types of people on the street, how do you get them to talk to you? Do you ever get unlikely people to stop? Is there a trick to engaging people in conversation?
Eichner: I just run up on them and don't really give them time to think or make a decision about talking to me. Everyone's unlikely, in their own way, I don't really give too much thought as to who I'm going to stop, and I've really learned not to judge a book by its cover, Billy on the Street is a real good example of it. You just really have to listen. You have to drop any preconceived notions you might have had about who they are, what they're going to say, and listen to what they're actually saying and reply.
Struble: Usually, your “on the streets” moments are quite humorous. Have you ever had a really poignant moment that really surprised you?
Eichner: I don't know...Billy on the Street isn’t a poignant show. I don't know if people are watching it for that. I mean, I find New York City very moving in general. You know, it's a beautiful place.

Struble: This special partnership with Truly seems like a fun kick off to summer. What's your favorite Truly flavor? Do you have a favorite food to enjoy with that Truly?
Eichner: I'd say Bumpin’ Blue Razz. I'm just getting like, a beachy barbecue grill vibe, a burger, a hot dog, something like that.
Struble: You just announced a big new movie. What can you share about it and any other fun projects for this summer?
Eichner: I'm about to start shooting it. It's with Will Ferrell and Zac Efron and lots of other fun people. Will Ferrell plays a famous TV court show judge, and I play his long-time bailiff, Stevie. I'm super excited to work with Will, Zac, and everyone.
