A sunny day and cold Belgian Style Wheat ale with a slice of orange is a perfect way to spend the day. While the classic Blue Moon is a sessionable beer, some drinkers would prefer a more potent potable in their glass. Blue Moon Extra amplifies the ABV without losing the flavor that people love.
While some beer drinkers may never stray from their favorite pour, others prefer to switch up their beverages time and again. Similar to how food trends ebb and flow, beverages take favorite flavors and add nuances to capture the a particular hot topic.
Previously, Blue Moon offered lighter options as well as a non-alcoholic beverage to capture the lifestyle market. Without losing the brand’s core citrus forward flavor, those beers make for easy sipping.
In contrast, the beer market is leaning into higher ABVs. While these 7% and higher offers pack a punch, many of the beverages can be IPAs or other heavier beers. For beer drinkers who want a stronger percentage but do not want the bitterness there have been few options, until now.
Blue Moon Extra is that same Belgian Style Wheat beer that people know and love with a higher ABV. Coming in at 8%, the beer is more of a single sipper than a sessionable option.

Explaining the new offering, Chris Steele, senior director marketing, Blue Moon at Molson Coors said, “Blue Moon is continuing to find ways to make every beer occasion brighter through its offerings, and now fans can enjoy the signature brightness of the Belgian-Style Wheat Ale brewed bolder with Blue Moon Extra. Blue Moon Extra offers beer drinkers a high-ABV option to enjoy this spring with the flavor they know and love, without being too hop- forward.”
Having had an opportunity to try a can of the Blue Moon Extra, it tastes similar to the classic beer that everyone knows and loves. But, this beer is about slow sipping. It is more of a beer to enjoy with a meal or over a long afternoon.
Since this beer works well with food pairings, consider serving this beverage with some spicy shrimp tacos. The heat from the spices combined with the citrus wheat notes play well together. Similar to how a squeeze of lime makes a dish better, the Blue Moon Extra makes a meal feel a little more complete.
The Blue Moon Extra is available on 19.2 oz cans. Check with convenience stores nationwide for availability and pricing.
