The cereal aisle is crowded with all types of offerings. While the character icons’ smiling faces will always be a welcome sight, consumers are looking for more than just a jovial moment. People want flavors, healthy eating, and choices.

As a single cereal brand, Cheerios has one of the most robust flavor line-ups. From seasonal offerings, like pumpkin spice, to classic honey nut, there is an option for any and every craving. The food brand even launched a veggie forward option. But, there was one option that was missing, protein.

Although protein is not necessarily a flavor, it is a component that consumers want as a choice. Even though cereal is popular meal option, it typically is not protein heavy. By incorporating protein into the iconic cereal, consumer get what they want, more protein in a food brand that they trust.

According to Emilie Knox, vice president and business unit director, Morning Foods at General Mills, “Starting the day off with additional protein can help our consumers meet their nutritional needs—especially with a reliable and delicious option from a brand they already know and love. As protein continues to be an important priority for people of all ages, we specifically created Cheerios Protein with families in mind. We wanted it to taste great and to preserve the iconic Cheerios shape, but with a good source of protein, all in a convenient cereal we know everyone at the breakfast table will love – turning all mornings into good mornings.”

Available in Cinnamon and Strawberry, the flavors have wide appeal. The fruit forward strawberry is great for kids. Additionally, it works well with bananas, a popular cereal topping. It is smart to have a fruit option that is also versatile.

Cinnamon flavor brings a sweet option without stepping too far into the sugary cereal category. In a way, it is a classic choice. Plus, the cereal milk is one that feels like an extra treat.

Also, the cinnamon flavor works well with a snack mix. Combined with raisins, fruit, nuts or even some candy would make for a tasty treat.

The Cheerios Protein is starting to arrive at various retailers. The suggested retail price is $5.39 and $5.69, depending on size. Check with retailers for availability.
