Finding a creative, different Thanksgiving cocktail for the holiday meal does not have to be too difficult. This year, consider a Citrus Herb Sangria and the guests will be asking for a second pour.

Wine is often a popular beverage choice for the Thanksgiving table. Often, a white wine, like a chardonnay is common. The approachable flavor, whether slightly oaky or a touch buttery offers a nice balance to the turkey, seasonings, and sides.

This year, Nate Berkus partnered with Woodbridge Wines to offer some creative takes on Thanksgiving food and beverages. While the classic wine is always a lovely pour on its own, this Citrus Herb Sangria recipe is a great swap for a more creative option.

Speaking about this particular cocktail, Berkus said, “To make it a little more festive for the holidays, I love a Citrus and Rosemary Sangria. It’s not too sweet and uses only a handful of ingredients you likely have in your kitchen. The perfect drink to kick off Thanksgiving.”

Here’s how to make the Citrus Herb Sangria

Ingredients

1 lime, sliced

1 lemon, sliced

1-2 oranges, sliced

½ grapefruit, sliced

4 sprigs rosemary

5 sprigs thyme

¼ cup sugar

1 750 ml. bottle Woodbridge Chardonnay

1/2 cup brandy

2 oz orange liqueur

1 cup sparkling water

Optional Garnish: rosemary and lime or lemon slices

Directions

Place sliced fruit, herbs and sugar in a large pitcher. Gently crush with a wooden spoon for about 30 seconds. Pour in wine, brandy, and orange liquor; stir to mix.

Refrigerate mixture for at least 3 hours to allow the flavors to meld together.

Mix in the sparkling water and serve over ice. Garnish with a rosemary sprig and lime or lemon slice; enjoy

While this cocktail is straightforward, it is best to pour the sparkling water as the sangria is served. After all, the bubbly fizz is best enjoyed at its peaked flavor.

In addition to pairing this cocktail with the traditional Thanksgiving turkey, it would be delightful served at a brunch. That slightly herbaceous note paired with the citrus can cut through a variety of rich foods. Instead of serving another mimosa, it would be a lovely swap.

From Thanksgiving till the end of the holiday entertaining season, the Citrus Herb Sangria will be the shining star of any gathering. Ready to get sipping?
