Bananas are a staple fruit in many households. Whether it is a quick bite while running out the door, sliced onto cereal, or blended into a smoothie, there are a bushel of uses. While that bright yellow banana could get a minion to go “bananas,” green bananas have some gut boosting benefits to discover.
In a Dole survey, 29% respondents said that they prefer slightly green bananas. Whether it is a flavor, texture, or other reason, it is unclear. Still, people would rather eat them a little green versus the over-ripe variety.
Given that flavor preference, Dole decided to unpeel some more reasons to enjoy green bananas. Dole’s manager of nutrition, wellness and communications, Melanie Marcus, MA, RD, shared that green bananas have more “resistant starch than their yellow counterparts.” While that phrase sounds complicated, it is an element that helps to support “better bowel regularity, metabolism and nutrient absorption.”
Since healthy eating should never be bland or boring, Dole has shared some simple, delicious, and creative recipes that highlight green bananas. These dishes might be the easiest way for anyone to get the serving of “greens” without one unappealing utterance.
For example, Oven-Baked Banana Fries with Creamy Avocado Dip is a great snacking alternative to chips. While the recipe is meant to mimic French fries, it invites people to see food swaps in another light. Just like the beverage world has removed negative descriptive words in their names, food should never have that dreaded “g” word associated with it. Flavor is about enjoyment and positivity.
The Oven-Baked Banana Fries with Creamy Avocado Dip use a variety of spices to create depth of flavor. The heat from the chilis and the smoky from the cumin are offset by the creamy avocado. It is a celebration of taste and texture.
While the fries are an option, plantains can be mixed with potatoes for a mash. Similar to how people use cauliflower to stretch mashed potatoes, plantains can be another swap.
For people who prefer a sweeter variety, there are plenty of recipes. From a Mint Green Dole Whip to a Leprechaun Smoothie, a quick search of the Dole website offers many options.
Next time the green bananas are sitting next to the bright yellow ripe ones, go for the green. The flavor and texture will be the food boost that brightens any day.
