During Dia de los Muertos, the personal ofrendas celebrate loved ones who have impacted people’s lives. From the grandma who shared the secret to making the perfect tortilla to the friend who always found a way to bring laughter to an celebration, the day is a way to honor the past. Hornitos helped people toast to those special people by pouring a spirited sipper.

The traditions surrounding Dia de los Muertos are cherished by many and misunderstood by some. The elaborate ofrendas and intricate calaveras can sometimes seem a little eerie. In actually, they are a celebration of the influence that the past has on the present. Many of the altars include special nods to favorite foods, hobbies, or other items that are special to the loved one.

Since food and beverages are often included in this display, Hornitos partnered with several local Los Angeles businesses to help people’s celebrations. For example, brands like East Los Sweets, a one woman operation, created beautiful sugar calaveras to use on people’s ofrendas.

Given that the day is often filled by telling stories about the past, present, and future, a spirited sipper can help keep the conversation going. Hornitos shared a special cocktail that captured the sentiment of the day.

While Hornitos has many tequilas in its robust line, the brand is known for creating the first Reposado tequila. The idea of barrel aging a tequila did not exist until Don Francisco Javier Sauza created it. As the blue agave spirit ages, the flavor nuances from the barrel infuse its deliciousness into the liquor. The resulting Reposado tequila is rounded, smooth, and quite delicious.

Although this Hornitos cocktail was created for Dia de Los Muertos, it can be enjoyed any time of the year. Toast for the Souls incorporates the stunning colors often associated with the celebration. Specifically, it includes the aromas of cempasuchil. Considered to be the Flor de Muerto, the boldly colored and soothing aroma is meant to help guide spirits to their home. In this case, the aroma brings a sense of comfort, knowing that the ancestors are always there to guide them.
