In this Kitchen Nightmares Grumpy George episode, Gordon Ramsay heads to Texas and finds that the food is lacking. While everything is supposed to be bigger in Texas, this plate of sausage rolls definitely missed the mark.
Grumpy George is meant to be an authentic English pun in Georgetown, Texas. From a plate of fish and chips to some sticky toffee pudding, this particular restaurant will face tough criticism from Gordon Ramsay, who knows a lot of about English pub fare.
It is more than authentic flavors that need to arrive on the plate. Although an old school commercial once touted, “where’s the beef.” It seems that the question applies in this Texas restaurant, too.
As seen in this exclusive clip from Kitchen Nightmares Grumpy George, the sausage rolls are lacking in more ways than one.
While it is clear that this restaurant did not get the “everything is bigger in Texas” cliché, it is more than just size that is an issue. Poorly executed food is a problem regardless of the portion size. These sausage rolls were dry, which is a bigger error than lack of meat.
Texans are quite particular about their beef. It is more than a particular cut of steak or Texas style barbecue. These diners want a smart balance of great flavor, well-executed food, portion sizes and value. Whether it is cowboy cut or a petit filet, the kitchen needs to execute well and deliver a great experience to the guests.
The “grumpy” in this Kitchen Nightmares is not contained to just Gordon Ramsay’s response to the poor food. The restaurant staff’s communication is problematic, too. It seems that everything is lacking in this restaurant. While a name can be a fun alliteration, no one wants to have a negative attitude when they are dining.
Revamping a British pub is in Gordon Ramsay’s wheelhouse. He has a pub brand under his restaurant group. The Grumpy George team should pay attention to Ramsay’s words of wisdom. From streamlining the menu and to giving guests what they crave, those two factors will get diners to keep coming back.
