While some people gravitate towards frozen cocktails, a summery spritz, or even that tropical sipper, others prefer an ice cold beer. With the Beach Bum beer-tail, the combination of Kona Big Wave and Golden Road Mango Cart finds that perfect splash of refreshment on a hot summer day.

During the warmer days, beer drinkers tend to gravitate towards lighter, brighter offerings. The sturdy stouts pair with snowy Sundays and the malty Oktoberfest offerings are for sweater weather. When the sun, sand and surf call, the beers are zesty, something fruit, and more versatile.

While there have been various “beer-tails” or beer combinations over the years (who hasn’t had a Black and Tan or Snake Bite), the newest offering was created by beer drinkers, themselves. The Beach Bum is a simple 50/50 mix of Kona Big Wave and Golden Road Mango Cart.

As Meredith Ruskin, VP of Marketing for Kona Big Wave said, “We love seeing our fans find new ways to enjoy Kona Big Wave, whether it’s taking a sip of our liquid aloha to instantly transport them to a relaxing, island-inspired place or pairing our liquid with new foods and flavors. ‘Beach Bum’ started as an organic order by fans across the country and has spread tremendously from there - so much so that everyone wants to claim they were the first to do it!”

The reason why this 50/50 beer-tail works is because the two beers play well with each other. Kona Big Wave is a classic island beer. With more body than a light lager, the American Blonde Ale has depth, approachability, and drinkability. It is sessionable, easy drinking, but is a flavorful craft beer.

In contrast, Golden Road Brewing’s Mango Cart is fruity, tropical, and a touch sweet. The wheat ale has that fuller mouth feel due to its style. Still, it is approachable and well balanced.

By combining the two beers, it is almost like a bolder shandy option. Instead of the fruity, almost half-beers of that lager/lemonade combination, the Beach Bum is beer forward. At the same time, the flavor feels like a warm summer day, sitting under a palm tree, without a care in the world. The juiciness from the mango entices with its tropical notes while the Kona Big Wave rides underlying maltiness.

With the fruit notes, the Beach Bum works with almost anything on the summer feast. From the classic burgers and dogs to the some fish tacos with a spicy salsa, there are endless food pairings to be enjoyed.
