As Halloween creeps up the calendar, the spooky season is more than finding the perfect costume and creating the eerie experience. Stocking up on candy, treats, and other scary goodies is vital to any celebration. One shopping fact might be more surprising than the most popular candy.

Halloween and candy go hand in hand. When the witching hour takes over, the parade of costume wearing kids ring the bell hoping for copious amounts of treats.

The list of most popular candy is filled with its usual suspects. There is no Keyser Söze (The Usual Suspects) moment on this list. According to Instacart, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, M&M’S, and Snickers top the list.

While these items are expected, it is curious that the sour candy trend seems to have slipped down the list. Instead, the classics continue to fill the cart. Maybe some parents are hoping to get a few leftovers to satisfy their cravings.

The bigger takeaway from this Instacart survey is that the Halloween hype is real. Although most candy purchases happen on Halloween itself, some people are upping the ante on the type of candy purchase.

According to Instacart, 36% of shoppers opt for full-size candies and 22% choose king-size candies. Maybe those last minute purchases benefit the kids. Who wouldn’t want the super-size food upgrade in the trick or treat bag?

Which are earns the top spot in Instacart’s Scare Score?

Since Halloween is a big celebration, choosing the right space to maximize that celebration is vital. The Instacart’s Scare Score takes into consideration factors such as candy, costumes, décor and more to determine a zip code’s Halloween spirit.

According to Instacart, the top 10 Scare Scores are in Utah, New York, California, Michigan, and Illinois. Sorry, Florida, HHN and Howl-O-Scream are fun, but they are not helping with the real neighborhood celebrations.

Truthfully, who knew that Utah was such a hotbed for Halloween celebrations. Maybe there is something scarier this spooky season than the receipts and rumors on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.

To ensure that those Scare Score areas keep up the hauntingly good times, Instacart is offering a special promotion. New customers within the highest Scare Scores areas can receive $20 off a $50 order. The promotion is available October 28-31. Use code SCARESCORE20 at checkout.
