From his stand-up to the Daily Show to his filmography, Ronny Chieng knows how to get people to take notice. While people might laugh at his witty point of view, they might not be aware that he is a man on a mission, a food mission. As seen in the new General Mills campaign for :ratio, getting that “win” can be as simple as picking up the spoon.

Everyone makes food choices. It might be based on a craving, hunger, or even a whim. Even with all the options, the feeling after devouring that bowl, grabbing a handful, or otherwise munching on a snack is not always the same. In the end, people need to have a positive experience once the chewing stops.

Recently, Ronny Chieng collaborated with the General Mills food brand, :ratio, on a new campaign. While the moments might be familiar, the concept deserves a second look.

As part of campaign, I spoke with Ronny on behalf of FoodSided. When asked about the campaign’s tagline, “every win counts,” he believes that “it is important to celebrate those small wins every day.”

In some ways, partnering with an American icon, General Mills, is another win in his book. He reflected that the food brand is a staple in many households and being able to be part of one of these campaigns is a special moment for him.

More importantly, Ronny appreciated that :ratio allowed him to bring his personality and point of view to the campaign. As he explained, “they let me put a little bit of sarcasm and they were not afraid of it. I was able to speak authentically about the snacks and it came out in the campaign.”

Although he is known for his quick wit and turn of a phrase, Ronny has a strong perspective on food and has evolved his outlook on what he eats over the years.

He said, “I truly do love food, but the truth is that I love food too much. No one really sat me down and told me how to eat. When you are young, you can eat everything. You get to college and you’re eating like a kid. But, as an adult, no one tells you that you can’t eat like a college kid anymore.”

“As a stand-up comedian, you’re running around town, eating late at night, and you’re a little undisciplined. All those factors can lead to some bad eating habits. It took me a long to learn that you can’t eat like a kid as adult. But, it is different for everyone. You have to know what works for you.”

While Ronny stays disciplined every day, with no cheat day, he appreciates that having food options, like :ratio, which feel indulgent but are still balanced are key for his lifestyle choices.

Ronny said, it is not about just going cold turkey or eating only one food every day. “most of us have food cravings, we need snacks like :ratio that can fit into the reality of daily life.”

As people learn more about food, evolve their eating habits, and create a balanced lifestyle, there are options that support those choices. Whether it is :ratio or another General Mills food, it is about finding what is a “win” in your day.

With food being the common connector, Ronny shared a thought that goes beyond the food served at the table. Given that he often has insightful commentary on the current state of the world, Ronny said, “sitting around the table and eating can be the moment to have a sincere conversation.”

Whether it is about the choices eaten, perspectives shared, or something else, the table can be an open space to let it all out. In some ways, that “win” will satisfy long after the plates are cleared.
