Sonic kicks off 2024 with two unexpected new menu items
While America’s Drive-In always delivers with great burgers, shakes, slushies, and other treats, Sonic, the popular quick service restaurant, tempts guests with two unexpected new menu items to start 2024, Peanut Butter Bacon SuperSONIC Double Cheeseburger and Peanut Butter Bacon Shake. It might be time to resolve to give into that flavor curiosity and place a food order.
Food trends always give people something to discuss. From pickle flavors to boldly spiced ingredients, these concepts have filled restaurant menus. While Sonic joined some of those trends, the new year brings a new conversation to the table.
These two menu items feature unlikely combinations. But, it is a flavor combination that is rooted in a well-known pairing, salty and sweet, peanut butter and bacon.
Launching on January 8, Sonic will feature Peanut Butter Bacon SuperSONIC Double Cheeseburger and Peanut Butter Bacon Shake. The two menu items are a limited time featured food.
Speaking to the unexpected new menu items, Mackenzie Gibson, Vice President of Culinary and Menu Innovation at SONIC said, “Peanut butter and bacon is not a combination you’d expect on a cheeseburger and you definitely wouldn’t think to combine these flavors into a shake, but at SONIC, we ignore what everyone else considers normal to deliver innovation that’ll make guests shout, ‘Hell yeah, SONIC!’. We did it once with the Pickle Juice Slush, and we’re doing it again with this latest ‘this-seems- weird-but-I-have-to-try-it' combination that you can experience either on a cheeseburger or in a shake.”
The Peanut Butter Bacon SuperSONIC Double Cheeseburger features “100% pure beef patties layered with creamy peanut butter, crispy bacon, grilled onions and melty cheese on a toasted bakery bun.” It might be just a handful of ingredients but it is a bold food combination.
The key to this new food offering is the creamy peanut butter; crunchy peanut butter would have an unpleasant texture. The creamy peanut butter acts like a sauce on the burger. The slightly sweet, nutty flavor brings the contrast to the savory bacon and salty cheese.
Also, it best not to add additional items, like lettuce or tomatoes, to this burger. It would throw off the flavor balance. This burger is meant to be an indulgence.
More importantly, the idea sets Sonic apart from other quick service restaurants. No one else is putting peanut burger on a burger. It is almost like a gastro pub version at a more reasonable price.
In addition to the Peanut Butter Bacon SuperSONIC Double Cheeseburger, the Peanut Butter Bacon Shake adds peanut butter and crispy bacon to vanilla soft serve. The dessert is topped with whipped topping and a cherry.
Whether eaten with a spoon or sipped with a straw, it hits that salty, sweet flavor note that people love. For anyone who loves candied bacon or a slightly less sugary offering to end a meal, this shake will be a must try.
