Holiday Gingerbread Showdown premieres on the Food Network. Will this first episode show some nice creations or will the bakers have a little naughty mistakes?

Holiday Gingerbread Showdown looks to be the Food Network’s new sweet baking competition. During the holidays, gingerbread houses are popular treats for young and old. Who hasn’t spent time decorating those classic, sturdy cookies with layers of icing and candy? But, these bakers need to have a gingerbread house that is both beautiful and tasty.

According to the Food Network, the Holiday Gingerbread Showdown premiere synopsis says:

"Three bakers run the gamut from naughty to nice as they vie to create the definitive gingerbread showpiece. The competitors receive a competition curveball mid-challenge that requires them to switch gears from assembling gingerbread to creating delicious holiday treats to act as functional parts of their final pieces. When the time runs out, the bakers must face a panel of judges that will penalize the naughty, praise the nice and send one contestant on to the grand finale for a chance at $25,000."

Before tackling the challenge for this particular episode, it is curious to see a change in a Food Network competition. In this competition, one baker from each episode goes onto the finale, which is different from the elimination style competitions usually seen on the Food Network. It will be curious to see if this scenario ensures that the best bakers make the finale.

  • Specifically on this week’s challenge, the bakers are creating a showpiece as well as edible, decorative pieces for that showpiece. This twist shows that the bakers must be more than just visual artists. While the gingerbread showpiece is visually impressive, the true talent lies in the taste of the bakers’ treats.

For this new Food Network competition, the hosts are some less familiar faces to culinary competition viewers. Host Marcella Valladolid is well known to Food Network fans. Addtionally, Adam Young was the winner of Best Baker in America. Molly Yeh has a popular Food Network show and is a well-known blogger.

Kerry Vincent hasn’t been on some recent Food Network competitions, but she has been a force in the pastry world. You might remember her from the older Food Network baking competition shows. More importantly, she is a master sugar artist, which means that these bakers better deliver on exquisite designs.
