Top Chef Season 16 episode 14 is the penultimate episode of this season. Will family bring inspiration or will emotions overtake the chefs?

Top Chef Season 16 episode 14 could be the most difficult challenge yet for the four remaining chefs. While these chefs made the trek half way around the world, the ability to stay focused could be waning. With only a few more challenges left, which chef will earn the title Top Chef?

According to Bravo, this week’s synopsis states:

"The day has come when the final four chefs must cook with the world’s smelliest fruit, durian, which is a delicacy in Macau. Then, the chefs get a tutorial in the traditional cuisine of Macau, a fusion of Chinese and Portuguese flavors, and are joined by their family members from back home. For the elimination challenge, the chefs are tasked with blending their own heritage with Chinese flavors in order to impress their love ones and the judges, in order to earn their spot in the finale."

For the Quickfire challenge, durian shouldn’t be a difficult challenge for this four chefs. If they didn’t expect a challenge using durian, they don’t deserve a spot in the final.

Also, cooking durian isn’t overly daunting. Of course, the pungent aroma of this exotic fruit can be overwhelming. Still, there are many dishes that can be created with this ingredient.

The Elimination challenge is far more intriguing. Blending cuisines and traditions is a vital part of evolving food. Today’s multi-cultural society isn’t focused on just one small facet of food. Bringing together all types of ingredients is part of global cuisine.

More importantly, looking a world cultures, there are similarities between foods. Chinese and Italian cuisines have a type of fish sauce. The names are different but the premise is the same.

Similarities between cultures and foods are great. Chefs just need to find the connections between all those different ideas and blend them into a cohesive dish. The chef that can find the common core will excel in this challenge and earn a spot in the finale.
