Ever wonder what the most popular birthday cake flavors are? While traditional flavors might seem like the obvious choice, the real answer might surprise you.

When it is your birthday, is one of the most popular birthday cake flavors on your plate? While chocolate and vanilla are usually the most traditional choices, birthday cakes are far from traditional. As the decorations get more elaborate, so do the flavors.

There is something just special about a birthday cake. Even that flavor itself has become something fun for everyone. Even when it isn’t your birthday, that special cake can bring a smile.

According to various studies, September is the most popular birthday month and September 9 is the most popular birthday date. Although there is various speculation why this month and date rank high, just look around your family and friends. How many have September birthdays?

Given that scenario, Gruhub looked at birthday cake orders in September and determined the most popular birthday cake flavors. While it would seem that vanilla and chocolate would top the popular list, the findings were quite different.

The most popular birthday cake flavor is salted caramel cake. As salted caramel becomes more and more popular in desserts, it makes sense that the flavor would become a popular choice for birthday cake flavors.

Additionally, according to this Grubhub survey, chocolate and vanilla didn’t even make the top 5 choices. The top 10 flavors are:

"1. Salted Caramel Cake2. Cherry Cake3. Mixed Berry Cake4. Key Lime Cake5. Rainbow Cake6. Lemon Ricotta Cake7. Banana Nut Cake8. Chocolate Cake9. Ice Cream Cake10. Cannoli Cake"

Overall, these flavors sound more like a plated dessert than a traditional cake. It seems that desserts are starting to cross over. People are wanting flavors, not specifically a dessert.

As flavors are starting to change, so are people’s celebratory dessert choices. Some people would rather skip the cake for another dessert. Shouldn’t people have what they want at their own celebration?

In the same survey, it seems that peanut butter pie was the top non-cake option. It seems that this rich, over the top dessert satisfies the celebratory mood.

Since this study is just one glimpse into some people’s preferences, other studies could have different results. Birthdays are about celebrating and everyone should have the flavors and desserts that they prefer.
