The best vegetarian restaurants aren’t had to find. With so many people eating vegetarian or flexitarian, vegetarian menus are becoming more common. More importantly, restaurants are really expanding the concept of what is a vegetarian menu.
Years ago, a vegetarian menu consisted of a lot of vegetables. While seasonal vegetables are always full the most delicious flavors, vegetarians want more than a plate of greens. As chefs explore the bounty that the garden offers, these dishes and menus push the creativity level.
In honor of National Vegetarian Day, Open Table released its 50 Best Restaurants for Vegetarians in America list. Looking at the company’s data, the increase in demand for vegetarian, vegan and flexitarian choices has increased tremendously over the past couple of years.
While most big cities offer a lot of variety, three states seemed to dominate this year’s list. Those three state are New York, California and Pennsylvania
In many ways, California seems to have an obvious connection. The west coast has always been a leader in the healthier eating habits. From clean eating to farm to table, California has often been a trend setter.
The same can be said of New York. Considered one of the greatest culinary cities, New York has a wide breadth of restaurants and food options.
The third most popular locale is Pennsylvania. Not always considered tops in culinary lists, the area is growing. Pittsburgh has long been tapped as the next great culinary city. Based on this list, it seems that the vegetarian choices are giving the area its due.
The unlikely top choice (fourth on this list) is Washington, DC. Often known for its power lunches and dinner, the Nation’s capital has often been linked to big, hearty meals and old school restaurants. The influx of vegetarian options shows the rise in this food trend.
Based on this Open Table list, it seems clear that the demand for vegetarian menus and dishes is only going to grow. When a chef can spark interest with creative cuisine, even the most ardent carnivore could be convinced to switch to the plant side.
