While Top Chef All Stars LA is filled with restaurateurs, a winning restaurant is only as good as its concept. Can one bad pitch ruin the bunch?

After last week’s double elimination, the Top Chef All Stars LA chefs are on emotional roller coaster. From an eliminated chef potentially returning to the competition and having to pitch a winning Restaurant Wars concept, even a fan favorite might hear pack your knives and go.

According to Bravo, this week’s Top Chef All Stars LA episode, “Pitch Perfect” features the following:

"The chefs are challenged to a taco throwdown for the taco king, actor and restaurateur Danny Trejo. For the Quickfire, the only sharp tool they can use is a machete, in honor of one of Danny’s signature characters. Then, Padma informs the chefs that the only way to make it to Restaurant Wars is to survive this week’s qualifying challenge. The cheftestants have to dig deep to create and pitch a restaurant concept complete with a couple of dishes to the judges –Padma, Tom and Gail, along with “Top Chef” Chicago Winner Stephanie Izard and James Beard Award winning Restaurateur Kevin Boehm. The top two concepts will be the restaurants built for the signature Restaurant Wars challenge, while the chef with the judges’ least favorite concept will be eliminated."

Bringing Danny Trejo to the Top Chef competition is a great choice. While asking a chef to use a machete in the kitchen could be dicey, these chefs will be able to handle it. Unless the chefs have some delicate knife cuts, that sharp twist shouldn’t be too difficult. Plus, who wouldn’t to see Brian Malarkey wield a machete?

As for the elimination challenge, seeing Stephanie Izard back on Top Chef is delightful. With her successful Chicago restaurants, she has found a way to create a winning concept. With Kevin Boehm by her side, the successful pair can spot a winner and a loser.

While some of the current Top Chef All Stars have restaurants, it will be interesting to see what and how these chefs pitch a Restaurant Wars concept. This pitch isn’t about a restaurant that they want to open, it is about a restaurant that can be opened and be successful given the parameters. Sorry, but an interactive tasting menu with gastro-molecular elements is not going to work. Sometimes, simple, great tasting food is the best concept.
