National Ice Cream month is the perfect excuse to enjoy another scoop of ice cream.

Do you like your ice cream  in a cone, a sundae, a sandwich, or a milkshake? No matter how you dish it up, chances are you love ice cream! “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!” the chorus from a 1927 novelty song, describes the “scream” we hear around the world from those who love ice cream. Although National Ice Cream Month (July) is traditionally celebrated in the United States, people all over the world adore this frozen treat.

In Italy they love Affogato – an Italian coffee dessert. A scoop of vanilla or coffee ice cream, “drowned” in a shot of espresso (Affogato translates to “drowned” in Italian). Chocolate syrup, spirits such as Amaretto or Frangelica and whipped cream may top this frozen treat.

Have you ever heard of Spaghettini?  An ice cream specialty made in Germany, strands of vanilla ice cream (made by pressing the ice cream through spatzle presses) look like spaghetti noodles, strawberry puree stands in for the marinara and coconut flakes mimic grated Parmesan cheese.

In Japan they serve Mochi, ice cream tucked into a sticky rice cake resembling a truffle. Thailand’s i tim pad is a rolled ice cream that has become a popular novelty in the United States. The French like their delicate lavender ice cream. On the other hand, French’s Mustard came out with a mustard ice cream with pretzel brittle for National Mustard Day.

For the adult who still enjoys being a kid at heart, Häagen-Dazs offers pint size ice cream made with boozy libations:  beer, bourbon and Irish liqueur. Perfect to serve for dessert served al fresco as the summer sun is setting. Although Häagen-Dazs sounds like a Danish name, it was actually founded in Brooklyn Heights, New York.

Every state in the US has at least one unusual ice cream flavor. Goat cheese blueberry, Sweet corn raspberry swirl, there is even a lobster ice cream! Rich, buttery vanilla ice cream is combined with chunks of Maine lobster at Ben and Bill’s Chocolate Emporium in Bar Harbor, Maine.
