When Hell’s Kitchen Young Guns premiered, many people were talking about the chefs’ ages. The thought that youth might struggle in the Hell’s Kitchen competition was served on a silver platter. Although that new component added to the entertainment of the culinary competition, another element influenced this Hell’s Kitchen Season 20. What did those signature dishes predict?

Certain Hell’s Kitchen challenges have become staples. While everyone cringes at the crazy punishments and celebrates the rewards, there are certain elements that Hell’s Kitchen fans have come to expect. From steak night to the reward of a black jacket, the popular Gordon Ramsay food television show is not complete without them.

Although the seasons have had variations on some classic to avoid staleness, the reality is that some challenges do offer insight on the potential success of the chefs. Unlike Worst Cooks in America, the chefs who score poorly on the signature dishes might not have the distinction of going from worst to first.

Was Gordon Ramsay impressed with the Hell’s Kitchen Young Guns signature dishes?

Usually, the signature dishes set a benchmark for the food television show. While the challenge has evolved over the seasons, earning a dreaded one (or having Gordon Ramsay spit out your food) is never a good starting point.

While the 1-5 point scale is a newer component, earning that coveted 5 score is not easily. It appears that there have been fewer than 20 dishes that have earned that score. Although the chefs do need to show a journey over the competition, earning a better score is vital. It doesn’t appear that any Hell’s Kitchen chef has ever earned a 1 only to win the competition.

With that idea in mind, earning a high score during the signature dish challenge does bode well for the chefs. Only a handful of times has a chef earned a 5 yet did not receive a Black Jacket. The most recent example is Gizzy from Season 18.

In the Hell’s Kitchen Young Guns premiere, only two chefs received a 5 score, Sam and Morgana. While the Blue Team won the overall challenge, there were plenty of “twos” from the blue team. Still, the majority of men’s scores were fours.

Even though winning this challenge, or scoring well, is important. It doesn’t create impending doom. Several winners have lost this team challenge yet went on to be a Hell’s Kitchen champion, just look at Ariel.

Whether or not the pattern of doing well in the signature dish challenge can predict a Hell’s Kitchen winner remains to be seen. It is only one component of the journey to impress Gordon Ramsay. Even if the chefs do not have to win this challenge, they did want to make a positive impression with that first bite.
