Toast the Olympic spirit with these globally inspired cocktails

As the world gathers to celebrate the Olympic spirit, why not shake up some globally inspired cocktails to toast the event. Although many people have their signature spirit or preferred cocktail, the Olympics can inspire people to step outside of their comfort zone. Although no one is saying that you have to wear that a Tongan inspired look, it might be time to put down the beer can for another option for a few weeks.

Globally inspired cocktails can come in almost any style. It seems that every country has signature beverage, cocktail or spirit. In some cases, this list could go on and on for all the days of the Olympics.

Just like many people cheer for the country of origin, many people might want to raise a glass to a spirit from that particular country. Or, maybe the Olympics are the perfect time to explore a new take on an old favorite. Instead of that Puerto Rican rum, why not try one from Guatemala?

Which globally inspired cocktails will you be sipping during the Olympics?

Although this list could go in many, many directions and could probably include a different beverage for every day of competition, that idea could become quite overwhelming. Still, for anyone having an Olympics watching party, this list could be a fun reference for planning some creative cocktails.

Team USA

While many people are cheering the red, white and blue, the possibilities of All-American spirits are plenty. But, why not go with America’s spirit, bourbon. A great choice is Woodford Reserve. Although it isn’t mint julep season, there are plenty of ways to enjoy a Woodford in a cocktail. For example, the Woodford Reserve Bourbon Porch Swing, which contains lemon juice, honey and peach tea, is a great easy sipper for cheering on Team USA.

Team Australia

While many people might instantly think of Fosters Beer, cocktail lovers have another recommendation, Starward Whisky. The wine barrel aged whisky has both American and French Oak characteristics. Instead of enjoying the whisky neat, the Starward Sweet Cherry Smash used cherry jam in the cocktail. A touch sweet, a little tart, it is one that makes you want to take a trip down under.

Team Brazil

Although the previous Olympics was set in Brazil, some people fell in love with the flavors of the country. Novo Fogo is Cachaça and the silver variety has lovely banana, passion fruit and other flavors. When used in a cocktail, this eco-conscious liquor is one that needs to be behind the bar.

Team Canada

While many people might think a Labatt beer or some Canadian whiskey, why not choose the bottle that makes a statement. Crystal Head Vodka has become a highly regarded vodka. It might not make you sing O Canada, but it is a vodka that always has high praises.

Team Guatemala

Although Guatemala might be picked to top the podium, there distillery in the clouds, Zacapa Rum is a perfect slow sipper to enjoy. The warm vanilla notes and touch of sweetness in this aged make this rum perfection for any occasion.

Team Ireland

While his UFC match might have been a little tumultuous, opening a bottle of Proper No. Twelve could make that pain go away. The Irish whiskey has become a popular easy drinking option. Just be cautious with your words if you’ve had a second cocktail.

Team Italy

While many people might think of an Aperol Spritz or a great chanti, why not explore Fernet Branca. Although some people shy away from the boldly flavored, the Olympics are the perfect time to take the three sip experiment. A little Fernet Branca with some tonic might be the new cocktail for the end of summer.

Team Japan

Of course, the host country needs to be represented. Now is the time to think about sake, and it isn’t the hot kind that some restaurants serve. Tozai has suggested the sake slushie with its Snow Maiden. Plus, the cocktail comes in its own convenient serving container.

Team Mexico

While there are many, many tequilas on the market, it can be hard to pick a favorite. From Tanteo Tequila to Tequila Corralejo, it might be fun to have a tequila tasting night. Why not discover how varied tequila can be.
