McRib season returns to McDonalds and the saucy sandwich is better than ever
Few menu items cause a food frenzy like McDonalds McRib. Now, McRib season is here and the infamous tangy, craveable sandwich will be back on the menu for a limited time. Block off the calendar because November 1 is McRib day.
Whether it is Homer Simpson or the legions of food fans around the globe, the McRib is legendary. When the infamous sandwich was created in the 80s, the concept was simple. The flavor combination of BBQ sauce, onions, dill pickles topping a seasoned, boneless pork patty on a homestyle bun was hearty, comforting and tasty.
Has McRib season returned?
According to Mike Bullington, Senior Archives Manager at McDonald’s, the inspiration was to create a sandwich for the colder seasons. The heartier flavors were meant to satisfy when that slight chill in the air took over.
Over the years, that single sandwich is more than just a satisfying flavor. As Bullington said, “Whether you’re a McRib loyalist or first timer, there is no denying that the McRib is one of the most iconic sandwiches of the last four decades and we have thousands of emails and tweets from fans to prove it.”
From the sandwich’s 1981 Kansas City, Kansas debut to international versions, the heart of that genius food creation has remained unchanged. It is a sauce sandwich that is bursting with flavor.
While some people might start the countdown to Christmas or lament over pumpkin spice season, the reality is that McRib Season might have the most loyal following. From its social media connection to the loyalist who will travel near and far for a taste, this McDonald’s menu item might be more craveable than those World Famous Fries.
How has McRib Season changed over the years?
When the McRib debuted in 1981, the “bigness” of the 80s was in full effect. From big shoulder pads to big hair, there was nothing understated about this decade. Thanks to a former McDonald’s President and Executive Chef, the McRib was born. Whether or not this sandwich was the decade’s greatest food innovation can be debated for years to come.
Moving into the 90s, the pop culture connection grew. While some people were saying yabba dabba do while eating that sandwich, the reality is that the boneless pork sandwich was becoming more than just another menu item.
When the 2000s rolled around, the sandwich started to innovate. While the McRib Jr offered a smaller taste of the classic, it didn’t lessen that obsession over the McDonald’s food. In some ways, it only added to the craving.
As more and more fans were vocal about their love of the saucy sandwich, the McRib season was born. Thanks to social media, everyone professed their love of the iconic McDonald’s sandwich. Now, it is one of the most anticipated times of year.
McRib season is officially back on November 1. No need to cook dinner, your food plans have been made for the day.
