While he might never be at a loss for words, Joel McHale knows a thing or two about pop culture. From a turn of a phrase to highlighting some celebrities’ finer moments, McHale appreciates that a good laugh could be as satisfying as a perfectly mixed cocktail. With his recent partnership with Rold Gold, the pair are leading people down a winding road which could lead to the ultimate treasure. Could they untwist these clues that lead to a golden prize?

For many people snacks are an integral part of food and culture. Whether it is binge watching that favorite streaming show, hiding behind a tub of popcorn during a scary movie or drowning tears in that period piece, food is and will always feed memorable moments.

Although no one wants to miss any moment, there is a longevity to snacking and pop culture which has stood the test of time. Brands like Rold Gold, who is turning 106 years old, appreciate that tradition satisfies that craving time and again. When people reach for that snack bag, they want to have that familiar, comforting flavor in their grasp.

To celebrate the brand’s 106 birthday, McHale and Rold Gold are partnering to give away more than $106,00 in gold bars. While it might not necessarily be the One-Eyed Willie’s treasure from Goonies or as special as a red stapler from Office Space, that real gold prize is a way for anyone to feel so money and not even know it (yes, that’s another movie reference.)

While the classic pretzel has been a favorite with snack fans for over 100 years, it is more than satisfying a craving. As Flavia Simoes, senior director of marketing at Frito-Lay, said, “We want to celebrate Rold Gold’s legacy as both a beloved snack food and as a staple in American pop culture. To do that, we’re launching our Gold Hunters campaign that underscores how Rold Gold has always been part of our lives. We’re also thrilled to introduce our latest bag design this summer. The brand’s new look speaks to Rold Gold’s enduring relevancy.”

As part of the giveaway, Rold Gold and McHale are taking to social media to offer various pop culture clues that can help people “find the gold.” Even McHale is part of the mystery. While McHale has a few hints for uncovering that golden prize, there is more to the pop culture icon than meets the eye.

Recently, FoodSided spoke with Joel McHale about his Rold Gold partnership. While the witty banter might have left us a little tongue tied at times, McHale is rarely at a loss for words.

Beyond the master of the grill and the chief happy hour officer, McHale has a few ideas on his preferred pretzel. While the new Rold Gold bag has some bold colors, he leans toward being “a traditionalist.” The tiny twists are just the right size for snacking. He was even enjoying some during our chat.

Although McHale had not heard of FoodSided’s preference for the beer drinkers love of a pretzel necklace, he did weigh in on the dreaded double dip snacking issue. McHale said that “it has been written into the bylaws of the family. And, if they are violated, it’s very harsh. That Draconian strict rule must be followed, and no double dipping is allowed.”

That double dipping concept can even be tied to a pop culture moment. Who doesn’t remember a particular sitcom that exposed the dreaded double dipping scenario?

Still, the commonality that brings people over a snack bag was clear. Although McHale might be having some fiery dishes for 4th of July, it isn’t the only option. FoodSided might be having the kids create a snack smorgasbord for the occasion. There are plenty of ways to improve that snack game.

While many of these comments are in jest, the reality is that snacks fill the family conversation. Whether it is the daily grind, a favorite holiday or even that pop culture moment. Regardless of people solving the pop culture clues, there is a treasure waiting to be discovered in every bag of Rold Gold.

Just like a favorite movie that people can watch over and over, that snack bag can bring a flavor that brings back a laugh, smile or simple memory of that special moment. Even if the kids left just little crumbs in the snack bag, again. Ready to open yourself to the possibilities?
