Jimmy John’s new Caprese Salami Pesto Sandwich is the flavor boss

While that freshly baked Jimmy John’s bread often holds a favorite ingredient combination, there is a new menu item that will have everyone cheering, mangia. Ready for that first bite of the new Caprese Salami Pesto Sandwich?

Looking at the Jimmy John’s menu, the brand is always ready to push flavor combinations. While many people have an affinity for a few classic menu items, the brand’s culinary creatives look fill gaps in the menu. Whether it was the successful wrap options or the recent Red Velvet cookie, that idea of finding flavors that surprise and delight guests is key to their menu innovation.

The newest menu offering, the Caprese Salami Pesto Sandwich, focuses on classic Italian flavors. But, it is different than another red sauce smothering some meat. In a way, the flavor is bright, zesty and the perfect bite heading into Spring.

As Dustin Hilinski, Director of Culinary Innovation at Jimmy John’s said, “We set out to develop a sandwich that was full of delicious Italian flavors. But we also wanted to make it unique to Jimmy John’s, which starts with hand-sliced salami – because we’ve always hand-sliced our meats as that makes all the difference – and then layer the other ingredients atop our iconic, freshly baked bread to create the most satisfying sandwich.”

The Caprese Salami Pesto Sandwich combines “slow-roasted tomatoes, all-natural Genoa salami, basil pesto, balsamic glaze, olive oil, oregano, onion, mayonnaise” and then adds fresh mozzarella. Looking at this sandwich, it is the combination of ingredients that makes the bite so impressive. Although tomatoes, basil, mozzarella, and balsamic vinegar are a classic combination, the tweaks to make that bite more sandwich conducive are smart. Each bite should offer that punch of flavor.

While the sandwich is hearty with the hand-sliced salami, it does not feel heavy. Sometimes, other Italian style sandwiches with a red sauce can leave people a little too full. This Jimmy John’s offering has lots of bright ingredients which keeps the balance. Going into warmer months, it can be a great option for lunch or dinner.

Although not necessarily part of the new menu item announcement, the new sandwich would fit into Jimmy John’s Achievement Badges customer loyalty program. An Italian badge saying mangia or mama mia might be fun.

In addition, this type of Achievement Badge offering could drive guests to make a purchase of the special sandwich. It does not mean that the familiar will forever be replaced, but it would be a fun way to drive excitement for the limited time menu item.
