Generally, fall flavors focus on warm spices and seasonal fruits. If the PSL has gone stale and the apples are not as crisp, the Sumo Citrus Spice Latte is the pick me up that has everyone falling for the satisfying flavor.

Sumo Citrus has become a favorite with young and old. While the curious shape has people doing a double take in the produce aisle, the reality is that the flavor brings them back time and again. When that easy peel rind gives way to sweet, juicy fruit, people will eat them by the bushel.

While that fruit has become a staple, their uses are plentiful. From a simple salad to a dessert, recipes go in all different directions. This fall, Sumo Citrus is ready to squeeze its deliciousness into the glass.

Combining citrus and coffee has been trending. While many coffee drinkers appreciate that citrus notes in a roasted coffee add subtly in that blend, it is more than just that influence. Some people appreciate a splash of orange juice or syrup in the mug.

The Sumo Citrus Spice Latte brings together the sweetness of the Sumo Citrus with Alfred Coffee. Although the beverage is not available in Alfred Coffee stores, the team has graciously shared the recipe so that everyone can enjoy.

Here’s how to make Sumo Citrus Spice Latte

Ingredients

Citrus Spice Syrup:

3 Sumo Citrus

3/4 cup + 1 Tablespoon White Cane Sugar

1/2 tsp Cinnamon

1/4 tsp Allspice

1/8 tsp powdered Ginger

Citrus Spice Latte:

4-5 fl oz Milk of Choice

2 fl oz brewed Espresso (recommended Alfred Coffee

Instructions

Making the Citrus Spice Syrup:

We recommend building your syrup in a 16oz Mason Jar, with a lid.

Zest one Sumo Citrus and add zest to the jar.

Juice your zested fruit, plus one more Sumo Citrus — you should arrive at 3/4 cup of juice. Add the juice to the jar. (If you come up short, you can juice part of your remaining fruit, just save 1/2 of the fruit for slicing!)

Add the White Sugar, Cinnamon, Allspice, and Ginger to the jar. Seal the lid and shake vigorously until all the sugar is dissolved and the spices are evenly distributed.

Slice your last Sumo Citrus in half, then cut the half into thin slices. Add the slices to the jar, re-lid, and shake again to incorporate.

The syrup is best the next day but can be immediately used! Adjust spices as necessary. It should keep for at least 1 month, refrigerated. Syrup made in a 16 oz jar will yield 10-14 lattes, depending on sweetness preference.

Building a Sumo Citrus Spice Iced Latte:

Fill a tall glass with Ice.

Add 3 Tablespoons (1.5oz) of Sumo Citrus Spice Syrup to the glass.

Fill with 4-5oz of your Milk of Choice.

Make a double shot of Espresso (either with an espresso machine, moka pot, or even instant coffee), and layer over the top.

Garnish with a Sumo Citrus slice from your syrup jar and enjoy!

Building a Sumo Citrus Spice Hot Latte:

Add 2 Tablespoons (1oz) of Sumo Citrus Spice Syrup to a mug.

Make a double shot of Espresso (either with an espresso machine, moka pot, or even instant coffee) and add to the mug, stirring to incorporate.

Steam 4-5oz of your Milk of Choice until it increases in volume by around 30% and is creamy. You can also achieve this on the stove by heating it to around 140º and using an electric whisk to aerate it gently. Add your milk to the drink.

Garnish with a Sumo Citrus slice from your syrup jar, some extra dusted Cinnamon, and enjoy!

While this coffee is more complicated than just pressing a button on a Keurig, there is something to be said about a well crafted beverage. From a morning pick me up to a dessert pairing, there are plenty of occasions to enjoy this latte.

Also, the Sumo Citrus syrup can be used in other recipes, too. For example, it is a great option as topping for waffles, pancakes, or even ice cream. On the savory side, it can be used with chicken, salmon, or even vegetables.
