Throwing a cookie exchange, the one must have item for your guests

As the holiday baking commences, the infamous cookie exchange looms. Do you know the one must have item for all your guests?

Throwing a cookie exchange can be a fun event. Knowing how many guests, amounts of cookies and a plethora of other items can be overwhelming. Even if everyone brings their cookies pre-made, the whole experience needs to be well thought out.  Although everyone leaves with their boxes or bags of holiday cookies, what should the host give her guests as a favor?

Of course, one answer is a cookie cutter. Holiday shaped cookie cutters could make for a fun gift. While many companies offer cookie cutters, one of my personal favorite brands is Tovolo. For the holiday season, the gingerbread men and women cookie cutters are really cute and festive. The Tovolo cookie cutters are easy to use and even easier to clean, two items are very important to any home baker.

Even though a cookie cutter is a great idea, another choice is even better. For my previous cookie exchange parties, my favor of choice was a spatula. While that idea may seem a little strange, it actually has both a practical and creative purpose.

First, the practical reason is that everyone can use a spatula. It’s one of the most versatile kitchen tools. From baking to kitchen prep to almost anything in between, a baker or a cook will use a spatula. It’s a kitchen tool that will definitely get used.

Second, the creative reason is that it can be quite festive. Over the years, I’ve given Tovolo holiday themed spatulas to my guests. The Tovolo holiday designs have both traditional and whimsical. I would often combine all the different designs in one basket and let all the guests choose.

Also, I would  attach to each spatula would be the cookie recipe that I made for the cookie exchange. While the cookie recipe didn’t necessarily match the spatula design, the cookie recipe was holiday related. A pretty ribbon tying the recipe to the spatula makes for a simple, yet pretty thank you gift for all the guests.

This idea even works if you are hosting a children’s cookie party. Tovolo makes some smaller spatulas that are just the right size for the smaller baker. Plus, what kid wouldn’t want his/her own spatula to help make the cookies for Santa?
